Quote from the seller:
High Gain External GPS Antenna / Antenna For VW For Audi Selected Navigation System
• Compact / low profile construction and fully waterproof.
• 3 meter long low noise waterproof roof rack
• Super Strong 1575.42MHz Double Armored Coaxial Cable Polycarbonate Radome
• Amplified GPS antenna (active) to improve and improve GPS signal reception.
• Integrated magnets for mounting on car roofs or other metal surfaces
Thank goodness I splashed out on a fully waterproof err, roof rack!?!

Oh yes, absolutely!

It surprised me, I'd read of needing a few miles to pick up satellites again, but it knew I was on my road before I'd reached the end of it! Maybe quarter of a mile and suddenly "please turn left!" (I'd set it for work address to see if would kick in)

This evening I have moved it to the other side of the panel (so the cable isn't looping over the boot seal and the "waterproof (roof rack!)" sealing isn't being tested. Hopeful it'll pick up satellites well enough there, but we'll see tomorrow when back into the office again.

Well pleased! :)

Mine have all done that including the very ancient Garmin, never registered, never updated, also Google Maps on the phone, plus the one in the Mazda which is otherwise somewhat frustrating.

Ah sorry, yes - I did not explain myself well. Normally my (medium ancient, but periodically updated) Garmin is normally pretty quick working out where it is. The car I don't know (as this is first time it's been functional in my ownership!)

But in particular, in respect to faulty aerial replacement, there's guidance such as this quite specific advice from Marc:
...Very important that you go for a run in the car for at least 2-3 miles in order for the unit to geolocate itself....
From here:

That suggests more distance needs to be covered

My old Garmin Nuvi still works brilliantly and even has fully up-to-date maps thanks to it using the same map schema as my cycling and running Garmins :)

Mine's so old it has valves in it and warns of highwaymen rather than speed cameras... Mine take ages to boot and start up - those valves take time to warm up - but finds satellites very quickly once it's up and running.

My old satnav is instantly available, uses no power and works without satellites!! Mind you, you do have to turn over the pages occasionally!! :-D

Interesting how they vary. My Garmin comes on fairly quickly (unless it's gone completely flat between uses, then it seems to be more of a "full" start up which does take it a while longer) but finding the satellites seems to take it a while. I've got used to setting off ahead of it actually realising where the start location is - at first that was a bit nerve wracking as if it'd twig before whatever the first junction I came across!

Maybe there's not as many satellites overhead here in Lancashire! :-D

Yes, yes Mick, very good on your map reading abilities!! :rofl2:

P.s. the new GPS aerial moved under the roof panel = worked fine this morning, I think that'll be it's permanent home (and the permanent fix)

Now there's a skill that's rapidly being lost :( I'm determined I keep my map-reading skills up to date and always give proper maps a good study if ever going somewhere new so that I know if the satnav is talking rubbish!

I pride myself on still being able to navigate using OS maps and a compass :)

I love how I can access a full set of OS maps right down to the 1:25000 set on my laptop and 'phone via the OS app. :D

Best of both... I've used my 'phone with the OS maps downloaded - so I can use them when the phone signal is weak or non-existent - with a proper compass whilst out hiking in unfamiliar territory :)

My phones have built-in compasses but with no (or weak) signal they don't work or are wildly inaccurate...

Ahh, another demonstration of the shocking north-south divide we have in the UK... Yes, we hoard all the satellites down here in the South-East and only let a few go north of the Watford Gap ;)

Seriously Matt, delighted it's now all sorted :D

Still not instant availability though Jim, and on a long journey you'd have to stop at various times to recharge your battery!! :-D
