i did not think the immobilisers chip was connected to the battery/key fob circuit board in any way,

it certainly is not in my daughters 02 Pissscasooooo

It was fitted to E39's and they started in 1995, it was certainly fitted to my 2001 530i.

Ford keys charge from the car too, I spent ages trying to open the fob on my work Transit before somebody told me that :oops:

C5s don't need power in the key to start. The remote key on my 2001 C5 was, and had been for some time, well and truly flat when I got the car and the 2002 estate has a non-remote key as a spare. The OP's experience must have been a coincidence.

It is. The new C5 (III) All keyfobs contain an imobiliser device. When you switch on the ignition, a dialogue starts with the immobiliser .
When the key is removed the immobiliser is automatically set.
