Broken C5 dipstick

Post by KennyW »

The plastic end has broken off the dipstick.

Just done a oil change, how easy is it to remove sump and retrieve broken part ?

As I could remove oil, remove sump, recover broken part and re fit sump with gasket sealant.

Suggestions please ?

I'll dig out the procedure later... what's the VIN?

I know it's not that hard on the 1.6

Richard,
I can get the Citroen procedure, Thanks for the offer. I was just checking to see if there was anything I should be aware of.
Why the h*ll did they make it from plastic and designed to break.

My old Reno Modus had a broken dipstick. It lived in the sump but the high oil mark was just still visible on the other bit.

Mine broke too. I've left it in the sump and I've got the same engine as yours. So far it hasn't caused any issues at all. I trust the oil level message on the dashboard. It doesn't seem to use any oil between the oil changes either.

I'm beginning to think that the dipsticks on these should be replaced as a service item i.e. replace the dipstick each time you replace the fuel filter :?
Sadly no longer a C5 owner :(

Thanks for the replies, my main concern was the broken part possibly enter the engine.

I need the car over the weekend but next week I'll drop the sump and remove the offending article.

Fortunately, I have notice when you drain the oil out and replace with 5 litres of new it sits between min and max marks on dipstick.

Are the new dipsticks from Citroen the same design.

hi Kenny, no way the broken bit can do much really.. the feed to oil pump is a fine mesh screen.. I did remove my sump and re sealed it.. think I had some decent sealant lying around from another job in the past..

Is it a 138bhp by any chance? Its capacity is 5 litres if it is. The hdi 138 is the only engine with this capacity apparently.

Wow, I've only ever seen this happen once on an old Rover. I really can't believe how many of us lot, who are fairly competent to use a dipstick, have had trouble with this.

This is a very common failure on diesel Fords where the stick is a fibreglass rod with a plastic measure pushed on the end, many times the end section has been left in the sump without problems coming to light.

Out of curiosity, which diesel engine is this? The shared PSA design or one of their own?

I'm not sure what exact engine it is but the model I'm referring to are 2.0 TDCi 2014, the last of the old shape cars, I look after about 20 of them. Other than this regular fault there are generally very reliable.

The dipstick issue also happens on the 1.6 HDI's & the later TU petrol engines.

Is that both 16v and the later 8v?
