A Good Source of LT71141...

Post by CitroJim »

In 20 litre drums but this represents quite good value for the genuine stuff...

I’ve just ordered a drum.

20l is a lot of LT71141 for just one gearbox as it'll do about five changes but if you know friends with them too then it can represent a good group buy. It's even cheaper if you buy two or more drums :)

And as Simon (Mandrake) has found, a few flushing changes can make a big difference

Not used these yet but seems to be a common place for some Swedes to get their oil from is this German firm... Works out about £20 cheaper if you have a card that doesn't charge for foreign purposes (comes to ~£158 delivered as opposed to £179.40 from lubricantsupplies) :)

If you have a sick gearbox like mine and the oil is really black/dirty, 5 changes is not outrageous. It's taken 4 changes of oil on mine (equal to 16 litres of oil) spread over a month or two to get the oil from totally black and the gearbox sounding like its on death row to the oil being relatively clean and the gearbox now behaving, and it could possibly do with one more change to get it really clean.

So if I'd known up front that this many changes would fix my gearbox and I had somewhere to store it, the 20 litre drum would have been good value. Problem is it wasn't until I'd already done two changes that it started to show improvement, and its a lot of money up front that might or might not have fixed its problems, so I had no way to know.

Were I to buy another Xantia V6 I think I would just buy the 20 litre drum up front to perform a few flushes over the first month or two as insurance, regardless of whether it had symptoms or not...any Xantia V6 that you buy now is almost certainly going to have very black dirty gearbox oil, which given their reputation is a disaster waiting to happen...

No sense of adventure, have you? My autobox shifts improved 50% when I added a litre of oxblood hand-collected by Masai tribesmen.

Hi Sam :)

Thanks for the Penrite links.

But sorry, Penrite do not flog genuine LT71141. The stuff they recommend for the HP20 is just a Dexron III substitute and that's no good for an HP20 at all..

As I've said many times, there is no substitute for LT71141 and if it isn't made by Mobil and labelled as LT71141 then it isn't the right stuff..

Steering the topic back on track (slightly)...
What's a decent price for the single 1l bottles of the official stuff? Going by the 4HP20 doc it seems like approximately 3l is needed, is this correct?

Around £11 a litre or so Ben although Opie Oils did do a special for about a tenenr a while back...

No, you'll need more than three litres. I can generally squeeze nearer four out and on one occasion I've done well over four with careful tilting of the car and quite some determination.

Opie oils often does a special of £9 a litre, I've bought off them a few times now and its varied between £9 and £10 a litre.

I get out almost exactly 4 litres when I drain mine, which I've done four times now...except for the first time when I only got 3.3 litres as it was too low in level. (Barely registering on the dipstick)

I would allow 4 litres per change plus 1 spare litre at hand during any given change. Bear in mind if you've never done a change before and the level is low it will need more than 4 litres the first time, but its very unlikely to need more than 5.

Thanks guys, I hopefully have someone that will sell me 3x1l of the official stuff for £30 + whatever it is for delivery. This seems on par with opie (although opie seem to have a notice saying limited stock or awaiting stock and to contact them). Will see what I'll do about the other 2l.

This guide seems pretty good for it (although for the 406 D8 rather than D9, but can't be too different :) ). They seem to suggest going for the 20l barrels to do it, I think I'll do 1 change and see how it comes out, if it's very black like theirs I will have to see if I can budget for a 20L Barrel, and do a few more changes probably in 2014.

What have you guys done to make up the funnel for it?
