Xantia door jam corrosion

Post by bigblackfalco »

I have a large patch of rust in the rear offside doorjam since I got the car 6 years ago which has been progressively getting worse.
I puhsed on it today and my finger went clean through!!
What is the general synopsis when they get like this ... does other stuff start happening underneath with sill etc?
Cheers.

Its a bit of a Hit N Miss section that rusts there. Some appear bad here, some dont. I generally found "Sunroof Equpit" cars are good here, and non sunroof cars bad. Im not sure if its structual, my P reg V6 Xantia has also gone through here, non sunroof car. But my 1999 HDi exclusive with sunroof is all good, so is my 1994 L reg Sunroof SX also good here. Ive got an SX 1999 T reg non sunroof car and its bad on these.. Ive also got an M reg SX with Sunroof to scrap, but its good in this area.

Cut a section out of a good car to weld in? I generally find it has NO relation to the underside condition what so ever though!! All cars being good in the area below..

However, Ive seen two S2 Cars, 1999 models, where the inner sill behind the lip section, directly below the jam section, has rusted right through and needed welding. The door jam though on these two were both in OK to good order..

That is a bit rusty

It is strange how some rust more than others. Obviously use, where it lives and care comes into it. However the innder door jamb area wont be affected by weather when driven so much, as its generally not too open to the weather. It seems to rust from the inside out, maybe if muck gets in there, but its sealed unless the rubber bung in the wheel arch has deteriorated.

Is it just not variable build quality and materials? I know the estates were built differently to the saloons. This does not explain why some rot and some don't. It only seems to be Xantias that are affected. Maybe there is an inherent panel fit/design problem that some escape from?

I know some 2CVs rot like hell, and others are rock solid.. it's all very strange.

Yup Xantias are odd, some are really good and have virtually no rust at all (my S plate was rust free, as was my in-laws R plate) infact I would describe the good ones as above average for rust protection, yet some rust to hell!

I find Rover 400's the same - either really good and rust free, or riddled with it.

What is the best way to treat the door jam area with waxoil or similar? As its an enclosed section which rusts from the inside out, I cant see how to get a rust preventative product in there. Putting it in through the holes in the upper sill (where the kickplate fixes) will not get to that area, only the lower sill.

The NS has a bung in the wheel arch which can be removed to allow access. However there is no access point on the OS. I have thought about putting in waxoil through the holes which hold the door lock latch on. However I suspect that will just run down the inside of the arch liner, or is that part of the sealed section which the corrosion problem is at the bottom of?

How does anyone else treat it?

Ive put a picture up of a section cut out of a car....

Thats whats behind there....

They are spot weleded along the seam that the door seal sits on... Now, Im not certain, but theres a gap in there. Water may get in there, as its open in sections.. Ill take further pics on the next car Im gonna start keep the two sections off this next TD thats going...

This shows that going in through the "Inspection" hole in the end of the sill in the arch is a no goer, theres an inner sheet as you can see... so that wont work....!!

Yes, looking at those it does put the idea of using the NS grommet hole for access. I wonder if my suggestion of the door lock latch holes being a possible access port?

Seems odd to me, how does moisture get in there and why does it not look rusty elsewhere in the space, rather than just the seem.
