help with 2001 c5 LDS level

Post by sonoramicommando »

ok so i did search on the forum, i found a few threads regarding checking LDS level but mine looks a bit different, possibly being the early model?

so is "BASE" minimum level at suspension low? which would mean the level from side view should be somewhere on the line drawn on this pic?

alos, what do "MAXI" and "HYD" signify here?

Don’t know about base, maxi and hyd. :?
That minimum level at low setting is too high.
There’s like a vague line below the arrow, just above the tank seam.
That’s what I take to be the ‘sufficient’ level, and that’s where my tank sits at normal height.

If there’s too much, it will squirt out at low height.
If there’s not enough, the steering will shudder near lock at parking speed.

No marks of any sort on my tank.
The year after, they made black tanks to make sure that nobody could see anything.

No markings on my tank either and it is too opaque to see the fluid level anyway.
Had a peep in mine last week and it appears different to the estate.
In the filler is a 'strainer' thing. A conical tube with slots to allow the fluid to flow and show the level.
The previous one was about 75mm deep and the fluid barely visible in it (until I overfilled it somewhat and it came 1/3 of the way up the indicator tube.

This one is much shallower - around 40mm and was full to the brim with some slight seepage around the filler.
I drew off some of the fluid with a syringe and it looks suspiciously like ATF (Dexron) rather than LDS.
It also ruined the syringe almost immediately, the piston locked in the bore probably due to the seal being attacked by the fluid.

If the C5 is similar to the C6, then you need to depressurise the system before checking the LDS level, once the system has been depressurised, then the level of the fluid should be touching the bottom of the basket.
