C5 external temp sensor

Post by carpy »

Hi all, first post and the inevitable question. I have a 2001 2.0 hdi c5 and according to the internal display its 120 degrees c outside. I've done loads of searches on the subject and now I'm stuck. I've managed to successfully remove the mirror glass without breaking it but looking inside the mirror I can't see any way of getting to the sensor.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Actually, thinking about it I think you might have to take the coloured plastic cover off. From memory you push the mirror closed against the door so you can see a small square hole.

Push a screwdriver through the hole to undo a plastic clip and then you have to ease the cover off the mirror body. There are more plastic clips (some might break) which have to be sprung off to contue removing the cover.

Once the cover is off you an see the temp sender.

Hi, thanks for the reply. I've pushed the mirror closed and can see the small square hole so there is a job for tomorrow :D weather permitting.

the most likely problem is that the sensor is bust due to "water ingress"
so you will need a replacement sensor 6445.F9

as for the process; after you remove the mirror glass, you have to remove the shell behind by releasing 5 lugs - 4 are in front, and 1 is from the back - the small hole you've found

Thanks for the responses. Just a quick update. Managed to get the rear shell off without breaking any lugs off - result. Where you can see the lugs inside the mirror housing I squirted a bit of WD40 and wiggled around them with a small flat bladed screwdriver. I then went through the small hole in the back to free the first lug then just slowly went around the gap between housing and shell with a wooden peg going slowly and applying uniform pressure. Took ages but it came off with no damage done. Now I just need a new sender.

The outside temperature sensor on my 2003 2.0l diesel C5 generally reads about 6 degrees (centigrade) lower than it should. However occasionally, it shows the correct temperature.
Before I start ripping the wing mirror off, is there anywhere else in the wiring that I should check for a bad contact etc.?

Not really - it's probably due a change and if the wire was broken, it probably wouldn't work at all.
