Xantia steering rack

Post by reservex »

I need a new rack for my xantia 1999 1.9TD i have located one on ebay and they are giving the following part No DSR580 AMK cross ref pt No Ts1075
do these numbers mean anything to any one? and is it right for this model year? as there are two types of rack, any help would be most welcome, Thanks

service citroen does not come up with anything useing either of those No.'s,

if you post the last 8 digits of chassis/VIN No. i will get you the correct OE part No. which you can then cross reference,

what is wrong with your rack as they dont offten require a complete rack change,

Hi thanks for your reply, last 4 digits 5416. It has had advisorys on th last three MOT's for play on the n/s and now has got so as there is wobble on the steering. It may have had a clout when it was younger, it was 5 years old when i got it. Thanks

i need the last 8 digits of the chassis/VIN No.,

not your RP No. which is 4 digits,

the play is probably the track rod inner joint and even though i have not fitted one myself, im sure they are replaceable,

i will get you the part No.'s for the rack and the inner track rod ball joint,
then you can deside which way you want to go,

The rack will be more than an average X reg HDI goes for, the inner joint £28 ish, there is an issue with the rack in that the N/S of it is supported by a splined nylon bush within the rack housing and they can wear and are not available seperatly, but they will not knock usualy, the early xm ones were metal bushed and they did rattle when theyt wore though.
I would also have a check and make sure the rack mounting bolts are tight, it has been known for them to work free and cause a rattling.

You DO NOT have to change the whole rack!!

You CAN change inner ball joints with track rod as an assembly....

Ive done this on XM's before now, I used a Good Mole grip, pulled back the inner rubber boot which was tight, and unscrewed it...

Daammmmm sight easyer then a rack swap...

It IS a Quick Fix! I did the XM in half an hour! A rack swap is a MASSIVE job... Steering colum off, UJ joint off, track road ends off any way, disconnect PAS feed pipe and Fluid return pipe, DROP THE Subframe for enough clearence.....

So the rack swap is NOT a quick fix... Track control arms will be!

Paul, pull back the boot and unscrew the arm where will the play be coming from inside the rack? and what bushes or parts would be needed to be replaced inside the rack to stop any play?

If you follow the track rod from the hub towards the rack, it goes into an inner Ball Joint... This joint unscrews directly off the rack end.... Theres no inner parts inside the rock to touch...

Theres just a rubber cover over the inner jjoint. It IS Very tight, had to use mole grips....

Possibly - or a scrap car - the rods are quite easy to check for play.. Grasp and pull/push....

I had mine from spare racks I had removed from cars Id dismantled..

Maybe you can remind me Paul! :D What's the deal with the inner washer
where the inner balljoint meets the rack's end - I cannot recall what the
Xantia design is like here as I've worked on Xm, Cx, Gs/A etc and there
are varied permutations? This doesn't have a peened over tab on a locked
inner washer onto a shoulder of the inner BJ?

It''s been around 6-7 years since i needed to change an inner bush/track rod
so I'm a bit rusty but recall having to get the multi ridged inner washer from
Citroen Prats.

BTW, I wouldn't use second hand when new on Citroen are very reasonable!
