Hello all,I own a 2001 2ltr HDI Dispatch,all was well in my world untill the engine management light came on without any warning/problems then the van went into limp mode,I took the van to my local garage but on the way it started to cut out without any warning, I would then stop turn the ignition off then back on & started out only to repeat this maybe 5 times on a 1 mile trip to the garage.
A fault code of P0230 was read & advised the low pressure fuel pump was faulty,this was changed but still the same so the pump relay was changed but still no joy,at this point the garage advised the van is taken to a citroen dealership as there diagnostics kit will give a more in depth fault reading & big bucks no doubt .Got the van home eventually and parked it on my drive which has a steep slop but strangely when parked on the slop( van facing down) it will cut out a few times on starting but will then tick over no problems and Im able to rev the engine without cutting out but back up on the flat it stalls.. (1/4 tank of fuel present)
I appreciate it could be one of many things but has anyone actually solved a similar problem as garages seem to throw parts at the problem untill it works and I just cant afford to do that like most of us...any help/advice appreciated.
Dreaded P0230 code...Help please!!!!

No han't any experience of this problem but I wonder if your problem is the lift pump in the tank. Reasoning is this :- If the lift pump is not working properly / well / not at all the HP pump will not have fuel to pump hence low pressure. But with the car on a steep slope pointing down the fuel tank will be higher than the HP pump by a bit and it may be that there will be enough gravity assistance to supply the HP pump with fuel. Failures of lift pumps are not that uncommon at least in the C5 world.

I don't know so much about diesel models (petrol_4_ever )but I heard about the fuel pressure regulator valve
inside the fuel filter housing which would cause problems. Especially if it is sticking then cleaning would help.
Worth trying before buying expensive parts and paying for long hours of diagnostics in a garage

If it's Seimens then please ignore this and say so.
Right, Bosch injection has a lift pump in the tank. Sometimes these pumps fail and sometimes they actually break up sending shards of metal through the system potentially ruining everything.
It therefore very important that you don't compromise the filter.
One problem with these filters is that when you take the filter element out stuff can get from the "dirty" side to the "clean" side.
You should replace the filter because a clogged filter could cause low pressure, but you need to drain the filter first, take the old filter out, clean the housing very carefully and fit a new filter.
Next. When you turn the ignition on (without starting) you should hear a noise from the tank for a couple of seconds. This is the system pressurising. Also I'm told that if you turn ignition off and on again you can actually see the filter housing swelling and shrinking. Never tried it myself.
You really need to verify that the tank pump is working before you move on to the next step, and if it has broken up then replace it and clean the system out before it gets into the high pressure pump or the injectors.
None of the low pressure side is computer controlled and I'm not even aware of any sensors on the low pressure side; therefore there's no point going to a Peugeot garage with fancy diagnostic tools as they won't help them to get the tank pump to work. You are probably better of going to a diesel injection specialist and they'll charge you less.
Once the low pressure side is verified then you can see if the high pressure side is correct. For that you do need access to a diagnostic tool that can read rail pressure. If the rail pressure is not getting up to 150bar then the engine won't run. But to be honest it does sound as though there is a problem in the low pressure side.

Thankyou for your advice gentlemen,the air filter & fuel filter appear clean with no debris visable within the fuel filter,have unplugged all the plugs I can get to & cleaned/reconnected & all the visable earths seem good although not tested with a multimeter,sometimes the van will tickover for ages & sometimes may cut out half dozen times in quick succession before settling into tickover & free reving although you can feel/hear the limp mode restriction kicking in but within 50 yards of driving it cuts out,ignition off for a few seconds then turn on,pump primes up,start & pull of then cut out & so on & so forth.seem to be grasping at straws at the moment so feel I have no choice but to let a diesel specialist take a look,will let you know there findings.

Collected the van back from a citroen garage today & told all appears ok now.They state that they have changed the fuel filter as good pressure coming in but slightly low pressure coming out toward hp pump,codes cleared& test driven ok but codes cleared did state possible hp pump issues(no code given)but driving ok.Great I thought,paid the money drove a mile down the road and bing!! engine light on & into limp mode but no cutting out,back to the garage who said only thing it can be now is the hp pump/fuel regulator & gave a quote of near as £700 . ..thanks il think about it untill I get out the door,back in the van started the old girl,engine managment light on but not in limp mode full power for the 15mile trip home so I think il carry on with light on & full power as long as this does not cause any problems & wait to see if the hp pump / regulator,limp mode behave as dont want to spend £60 + just to have the codes reset/cleared...oh the joy of an hdi

Hello, any one out there? Wondered if this ever got fixed? I have the dreaded code p0230 and three others besides. They are p0560, ignoring for the moment, batttery is a bit knackered. p0243, p0403, also ignoring as I don't think they are the primary issue. which I believe is the afor mentioned p0230.
Like poster here, my fuel pump checked, myfruel relay replaced, but can't hear the pump prime any more, and has gone from the hesitant, to cutting out, to not starting at all.
Question, do you all think low pressure from a filter blockage could be causing this?
