THP Inlet port cleaning
Cleaning the carbon from the inlet valves of a THP engine is not a simple process. There are a few methods that have been used:
- Chemical cleaners sprayed in though the turbocharger air intake
- Removal of cylinder head and mechanical cleaning
- Walnut shell media blasting
Chemical cleaning without dismantling
This technique has the advantage of being quick and easy, but it is not believed to be very effective, and it is impossible to tell if the treatment has been effective.
Cylinder head removal and mechanical cleaning
This method is effective, but is a lot of work.
Walnut shell blasting
This technique is effective, and requires less labour than cylinder head removal, but does require access to a media blaster with specific attachments to clean the ports.
