Heater fan resistor

Unread post by short_frank »

I have been searching the forum for an answer to my problem and think I have it narrowed down but I am still stuck on one point.
I have a 97 1.9 TD Xantia and the heater fan motor has gone kaput in the last week. When I start up it comes on but after a few minutes it dies (thermal overload resistor?) and then I have a loud rattle as if the fan is turning but I have damaged bearings. Is my fan gone as well as the thermal overload resistor as was said in another thread on this forum? if the resistor is at fault where is it? I work with electronics engineers so repair is the option for me on this if of course this is the fault.
Any help is gratefully recieved.

You've probably absorbed an acorn into the heater or something. Remove the heater motor and give it to one of your electronics engineers to service the motor. Pay him great respect and fill him with drink. Never fails.

Hello!
A common problem is water ingress through a cracked scuttle panel, this can destroy a motor. From memory the resistor is combined with the motor. Its easy to remove the motor, in passenger footwelL, 3 philip screws then it will drop down.

I stripped the motor and found the brushes neede replacing. couldn't get the right size so I doctored some and soldered them in and all is well with the world again.
