I took the BX to a well reputed diesel specialist in the city where I live as I was driving past their door. He had a listen and said it sounded pretty normal to him and that when cold it will be more rattly because the cold start mechanism advances the pump timing a bit. He said the injectors should be good for at least 150,000 kilometres. Mine has only done 107,000.
I asked him what he thought about fuel additives and he didn't slag them but I got the impression he thought they were pretty much a waste of money.
I still think it's a bit rattlier than a couple of other BX's or Pug 405 SRDT's I have heard though.

I've noticed on a few XUD engined cars I've had that the engine gets noticeably more rattly when its due for an oil change. The grade of oil seems to make a big difference too.

I used to have a diesel BX, and fitted a new timing belt. 5000 miles later, it started to sound rattly on idle, and gave the symptoms of failed glowplugs when starting from cold.
Cause? Cam belt tensioner wanted readjusting - belt ever so slightly slack!

I am very interested in what you say because my timing belt and tensioners were fitted new only about 4500 miles ago and I'm sure that the clatter has got worse sometime since then.
The work was done by a Citroen agent but I think I will get the cam and pump timing and belt tension rechecked by my trusted citroen independant garage very soon just to be safe.
