The conclusion has to be that as a safety aid, for general driving, and the driving public who aren't really into cars at all, they have to be a good thing.
That sums it up quite nicely Mike, I think its a general case of all the aides you can get when you have no particular expertise, ie me and cameras, but none at all when you know what you are doing and are fully competent at the job in hand! :-D
and.....what happens when the unexpected suddenly presents itself ??

Sorry Mick, but I have to say what a load of "I am a driving God" twaddle that takes no account of possible encounters with other people and their errors, faults on their cars, acts of god or (I am sure it would never happen) your own error which may be mitigated by a safety system such as ABS, ASC, TC etc....
I had such an incident and often wondered if a modern car would have dealt with it differently and maybe saved a lady's life.

No think of an Activa with added ESP :)

As always Tiff shows it well....with and without....note, the taller the car (SUV's etc), the more the roll over effect will be

In my introduction to this thread I wrote:

"I found myself pondering today on a subject which has cropped up on various threads over the last week or three and decided to layout my thoughts for general abuse purposes :-D"

It seems my thoughts are suffering. Basically There are two different perspectives coming out, road and driver safety versus driving satisfaction. As a motorsport participant I, in common with my fellow enthusiasts, regard Formula 1 as the pinnacle of motorsport and a prime example of the satisfaction that can be gained from driving. Formula 1 banned ABS in 1994 and banned Traction Control in 2008 in order to concentrate the sport on the skill of driving rather than the technology. It will remain banned in next year's new regulations although some technology changes are being introduced to aid the performance of the car and make the sport more entertaining.

I come from that side of the tracks, no pun intended :-D , so as long as I am able I would prefer to keep control myself. When the time comes that I feel I need help driving then I'll opt to use the bus!! :-D

Yes, and knowing how an Activa lets go when on the ragged edge... It's not pretty  Only good for the makers of Persil

*Used to be. I find WRC utterly tedious now, with all the super-capable, looky-likey almost spec cars. It's heyday was late 90s-2012 before they changed the rules.

I had lunch with my friend with the EV today and he told me he has been back to MG to get the lane assist deleted and he was told,"We can't do that sir, it is an EU regulation that the driver aids must be active every time you turn on the car!"

He frequently gives lifts to a disabled person and when they arrive back at said person's house he has to get out to assist the wheelchair extraction. When he gets back in again he has to turn them off again, it's driving him mad and I wouldn't be surprised if he ends up selling the car and returning to something that he can control how HE wants it rather than how the EU want it!! :-D

I don't have an issue with driver aids per se, it is the bloody interfering NANNY STATE driver aids that bug me! (ESPECIALLY the ones that actively take part in driving).

I was of the opinion that one of the reasons behind Brexit (right or wrong, and lets' NOT go down that route) was so the UK could opt out of EU regulations.

The UK can.....but will the politicians allow the opt-out .... not a chance.

As IF this person has any interest is "driving"....tbh I do not know how she can be safe controlling a push bike whist holding her glasses (rather than wearing them to see) in one hand..............

I have joined the ranks of those with a nannycar.

So many buttonzes! Not a clue what most do. Took me ages to work out how to lock it, went straight to the doctors after picking it up. Likely spend most of tomorrow trying to work it all out.
Lots of flashy squeaky stuff as I attempted to get it into that parking spot (there's a Mondeo Estate in front of it).
Paid for it then had to go to the next town to tax it. Tax has increased horrendously. From £0 to £20!

Jim, SHE has stated thus....as well as calling cars an "outdated and damaging form of transport that needs replacing"....so not having a "go" at bicyclists just the out of control lump on that particular one :)

I wonder if she has a selection of stolen mobile phones in her pocket like the last Transport Sec ?
