The guy in the thread that I linked, dealt with the solenoid while still fitted to the engine (page 2) - though he said access was difficult.

The separate web page that was linked from page 1 of that thread (Citrojim's write-up on overhauling the pump) dealt with it once removed from the car.

Patrick,
I’m a dummy  I’ve just realised it’s deisel! My reply was about a petrol. :rofl2:
First job is to make sure the glow plugs are working.Does the glow plug light on the dash stay on for 10 or so seconds. If so put a meter on a glow plug and turn the ignition on.
The glow plug relay is a green box normally fitted near the battery.

I was referring to the key as pictured here:

You can easily check if it's a fuelling or heating (glow plugs or compression) - does it smoke when cranked? If not then no fuelling. If it does, then you are short of heat one way or another. If it was plugs or even compression, then I would have expected a few cycles on starting fluid to have given enough heat to keep it running.

This suggests fuel is getting to the pump ok, then.
No smoking is getting out of a exhaust
If nothing coming out (nb: you wouldn't see that from sat in the drivers seat, you'd need someone stood looking at the exhaust tip itself while cranking - it would only be 'whiffs' rather than a cloud) then it does sound like no fuel being injected.
As we've mentioned before, confirm that for sure by cracking a nut loose where the pipe fits to an injector and cranking the engine. Fuel should spray out.
If it doesn't, you have no fuel being delivered out of the pump as you originally suspected - and the pump is the thing to focus on.
