In varying forms, they're ALL snake oil.

There's literally nothing that will replace the lost metal from piston rings and bores, other than new metal. As someone above mentioned, the most likely content is just a really heavyweight oil. Which then gives rise to the problem of overly-thick oil not getting to places it should.

Variances when compression testing can happen, espeically with the kind of low-end testers people use at home, so I wouldn't worry -too- much. And even if it is low on one cylinder, what are you going to do about it? At the very least it'll be a head removal to redo the valves, or a total engine rebuild\replace if it is the rings. Which is almost certainly not worth it.

I still wouldn't rule out some form of intermittent electrical fault. There's been a lot of disturbance of the engine bay in among all this.
