A good few years ago, I was with some friends at a private military museum somewhere in Germany. There stood a Hind which we were all admiring. A mate casually and randomly pipes up:
"Last time I was in the front of one of those, I was being flown around Chernobyl. The pilot told me not to touch ANYTHING"
WTF ???
Eh ??????? :eek1:
He calmly walked on and wouldn't give many more details.

Continuing Matt's theme
You will never find this one in "just passing" you will either have to seek it out or take a wrong turning somewhere on Teesside in the vicinity of Thornaby...highly unlikely. :-D
NewcastleFalcon wrote: 10 Nov 2017, 22:54 Yes "lost" on Teesside in unfamiliar territory in the early evening busy road darkness! Took a wrong turning but ended up passing this Spitfire replica on a roundabout and a school named "Bader Primary" on the adjacent road. Now that's far too much intrigue not to look it up!

https://www.google.co.uk/maps/@54.53342 ... 6656?dcr=0

Turns out the school was built on the site of Thornaby Aerodrome, and Sir Douglas and Lady Joan Bader opened the school in 1971.

24 hours is enough time to break any code, so yes the incomprehensible stickers you used to put on your Airfix Spitfires and other planes are decipherable. Basically Squadron codes and an identifier for the particular plane. Being "Homages" our Spitfires on Sticks can use a bit of poetic licence.
Our Thornaby Spitfire
PK651 B RAO (Star)

PK651 registration code RAO=No. 608 (North Riding) Squadron Royal Auxilliary Air Force B=Plane ID"
BM481 YO T (Port)
BM481 registration Code YO=401 Squadron Royal Canadian Air Force T=Plane ID

Our Turnhouse Spitfire
L1067 XT D

L1067 Registration Code XT=No. 603 (City of Edinburgh) Squadron Royal Auxillary Air Force D=Plane ID

Those 2 are by no means the only "Spitfires on Sticks"

Biggin Hill has one

Salisbury (Rugby Club) has one

Pyle (Wales) has one

Plenty more too...

On the coach arriving at Heathrow I heard an old lady behind me say "ooh it's not very big is it." pointing to this. https://www.macfilos.com/2021/04/21/wha ... -concorde/

Worth a few minutes read of that. Wonder if many will get to the end bit about Tony Benn's reinstatement of the "e" :-D

The problem with Spits on Sticks is there likely a fibre glass copy. I helped put together the Hurricane and Spitfire at Duxford, damn my arms itched after bolting the wings on from the inside! As for JE-J (Johnnie Johnson) definitely fibre glass. No way would that be left outside if real!

Does anyone know if the East Kirkby Lanc is still doing taxi runs? Would love for my boy to be in and see what it's like.
