Currently having lunch in a pub called The Roebuck near Stratford on Avon,
A working lunch
A working lunch
Had to drop my friend at a golden wedding party down the road so I've escaped until 5!! :-D

It has given me a chance to mull over the pros and cons regarding my pending decision. Before yesterday the scales were very much in favour of keeping the C4 and selling the Subaru, but yesterday's news has put a new slant on proceedings. If I follow that plan I will find myself with two cars that both will cost £12.50 to drive in the ULEZ zone. Should they expand the zone to encompass Elstree it will cost me £1800 a year to maintain my visiting pattern. Set against the £385 a year tax on the Subaru, free to go in there, that makes no sense. However a third idea has occurred to me. Sell the MX3 and keep the Subaru and C4. Downside of that plan, apart from losing my fun car, is that insurance on the MX3 is under a hundred a year for its classic policy The other two cars will cost around a grand for the pair Hmmmm!!! Thoughts? :-D

I'm not a Subaru fan, or more accurately, I don't really know much about them, but between C4 and Subaru - is there anything specific it can do the C4 would leave you stuck?

As seems a no brainer in terms of running costs (tax and fuel though recall you had some pretty surprising economy from the Subaru - I thought they were thirsty things, you've showed me that's not true case) to choose the C4.

How many years for the MX3 'till it's 40th birthday? (as then it's running costs take a huge drop)

Obviously I vote keep the fun car! :)

The MX3 is 30 this year so a way to go for it to become tax and MOT free. The Subaru is 4wd and packs a mighty handling bonus. Keeping 3 is not possible Paul due to space. :(

A difficult one Mick. Question is, are there any known definite plans for Elstree to join the ULEZ in the short to medium term?

As soon as Jim gets his car port done, kick his blue car out onto the street and park the MX3 there instead. Storage problem solved. :-D

  I currently face the same problem - one car more really than I have space for... I have a temporary solution that works because Pix and Bluebell are both small cars... They play 'sardines'. Packing them in tight, I can just about squeeze in another small car but the big downside is that getting them in a position to drive anywhere is a right old game of musical chairs!

Be interesting to hear the outcome of that research Mick... I can imagine the locals around that way would be in absolute uproar if any plans are afoot.

I completed a job this morning which has negated a very big no no for me - the lack of a rev counter. I have posted it in the Citroen forum as my query started there!! : viewtopic.php?p=808873#p808873 :-D

ULEZ is about NOx - which wasn't (really) overcome on diesels until E6 and the advent of AdBlue SCR systems. Unfortunately running lean = more NOx! There is an argument that actually petrol cars tend to produce more NOx as they age and probably overtake equivalent age diesels, but never mind. That most ULEZ zones already met the NOx requirements by the time they were implemented (mostly due to the removal of older busses which were most of the source in congested areas, and the creeping replacement diesels with E6 compliant cars) is also by the by. Manchester's was cancelled (under review according to the signs  ) after the squillions of quid had been spent!

Something cropped up yesterday to add to the ULEZ issue. SWMBO has holidays in the sun (I can't stand the heat!) twice a year with two of her friends. My duties include the delivery and collection runs to the airport, Gatwick usually, with the three of them and their enormous cases and bulging hand luggage. I just about get it all in the Subaru but judging by my trip to Germany with just two girls and minimal luggage I have no chance of getting them in the C4.!! :( :) :-D

Also following my test run in the Subaru last night I realised that it had been slowly losing performance over a long enough period for me not to have noticed. It was like driving a rocket ship glued to the road - I'm definitely keeping the Subaru, now the decision is between the MX3 and the C4 as my reserve transport. I'll compose a comparison table later!! :-D

You'd expect the economy to improve as well, although that might depend on the weight of your right foot - all that power gets addictive :).

The C4 is a gonner!! I've just received a Notice of Intended Prosecution for speeding at 47 in a 40 on the way home from Dover last week!!! That does it, the speedo being in the centre panel means it is not always in view when driving and thus I allowed the speed to creep up along the A12 from the Blackwall Tunnel up to the North Circular, going down one of the underpasses no doubt and caught by a camera!! Hopefully I'll be able to take the awareness course and thus avoid any points!! :?

Does the C4 not have cruise control? I use CC on both the C5 and 308 at every opportunity and it sure makes for restful driving. I managed to keep a completely clean licence until this time last year when I was coming back across the Pennines along the A616 north of Sheffield. The speed limits there are up and down like a whore's knickers and as a result I was clocked at 46 in a 40 limit. This at about 2:00am when there was literally no-one else on the road! Fortunately I was offered a speed awareness course so officially the licence is still clean.
