I think an awful lot of the public want full autos these days. The company Mrs Bobins works for has a very large fleet of courtesy cars and there can be a waiting list for the autos as 'everybody' wants them. Same with the company cars - if she'd wanted an auto she'd have had to wait for availability of one, but she asked for a manual and was told she'd have it by the end of the week.

Well had a full day's graft at Jim's preparing the C4 for the trip next week. We did the strut top and then because I had the parts in the boot we did an engine service as one part of it, replacing the air filter, requires the same amount of dismantling as the strut top. You will be able to read the saga on DIY Motoring thread later! However the delivery companies were very busy in Hertford while I was in Paggers and as a result I came home to the next day's work: :-D
Nearly all the parts I'd ordered
Nearly all the parts I'd ordered
The only thing that didn't arrive today was the clip/fastener/bolts for installing the under cover but hopefully they will be here tomorrow and I can get that and the hatchback struts done on Thursday!! :-D

I have now reset the service light too, having got the handbook, so a new 10000 mile interval now begins!!

You may have noticed Citroen's price for the engine undercover here when Richard posted it for me, I'm pleased to say the one in the picture above is an aftermarket version, so yes there may be some fettling involved, but at £39 it has to be the way to go!!

I have a mystery connector floating about in the bottom of the armrest well. The storage box insert is missing and on order from the bay and both Marc and I wonder if the connector may be for an aux unit giving USB and maybe something else. Any suggestions are welcome , especially if you actually know what it is for!! :-D

I think I may have answered my own question thanks to the ebay description for the one I have ordered. This is the suffix to that description:

"Genuine Citroen C4 Mk1 Centre Console Storage Bucket. For use on Vehicles without 5 CD Multichanger.
Genuine Citroen Part Number - 7589 N9
Number 5 in Diagram"

Therefore methinks the plug is for the CD multichanger which would have been removed when the stock sound system was replaced with the Android system now in situ!! :-D

Think you are on the money there.

Was racking my brains but having seen the various centre console diagrams posted on the other thread I realised my former lowly SX not only didn't have the CD changer but also not the arm rest you have empty either! :)

Like the engine undertray - I think I'd go aftermarket too given the 90% cost saving! :)

Well I got home last night and the car had done a superb job. With most of the trip on motorways with aircon on, 3 up and luggage I am happy wih the 54 mpg recorded. However I have to report that the strut top work has not cured the rumbly knock sound from the offside
Further investigation needed there. I came home to a pile of parcels containing front undertray, fixngs, parking sensor and dent removal tool which will come into use in the next few days! Watch the DIY Motoring thread for further news!! :-D

A big negative in my decision to keep the C4 arrived this morning:
The notice I really didn't want!!
The notice I really didn't want!!
Because the C4 is only £35 a year to tax and the Subaru is £385 I had, dumbly I know, assumed it would be ULEZ compliant as the Subaru is!! Wrong!!! How that reasoning works I have no idea but my little test run on that Wednesday cost me £90 more than it should have. Admittedly it is my fault for not checking and paying the £12.50 charge that was due and now I have to pay for it. However if the ULEZ zone is expanded just a tad more than now then it will cost me £37.50 a week to carry on my life as it is. That has to be included in my deliberations over which car to keep!! :-k :-k :-k

Oh Mick, that's such a shame  I don't think there is any rational reasoning bar how much money they can make out of these schemes.

Unfortunately, Euro 6 is the minimum threshold for diesels in the emissions zones. Roughly 2015 or so.

Small comfort but be grateful you didn't travel through Glasgow instead - "fine" is less (£60) but if you pay early they very graciously reduce it to a mere £30!

Petrol gets an easier ride - Euro 4 I think is threshold for those, unlocks much older petrol than diesel options. Think this disparity is to underline the current "diesel is the bogeyman" narrative forming the basis for current tax with veneer of green washing.

A bit of a turnaround when not so long ago, diesel was seen as the big saviour and all and sundry were encouraged to go diesel.

Yes, it is 180° on previous "we've got to get our CO2 emissions down, so will wallop the tax on petrol"

The resent developments/understanding on the very fine particulates given out by diesels - don't get me wrong, a serious health hazard - has been jumped upon as a way of squeezing more tax out of us.

I'm sinical it's "we're just doing for your health" as it does not need to be all the way up to Euro 6 before they are encouraging DPF equipped diesels over those without: my 2009 C5, my wife's 2004 206, heck even my 2002 HDi Coupe come with a DPF - but have been put in the "dirty old diesel" (pre Euro 6) bracket.

Agreed, any DPF equipped diesel really is quite clean. A cursory glance at a spotlessly clean tailpipe shows that. Yes, tiny particulates are a serious health risk but diesel vehicles are by no means the only source. The amount of fine particles give off by brakes and tyres for example are enormous but is rarely considered. There are, I'm sure, many other sources too...
