It seems to be just sticky on the surface. Will give that a go though.
May be that the heat from the cooker has affected it.

Tried the screenwash and it made it worse. Also the toothbrush now tastes awful.
Have a few more things to try yet.

Remember I used screenwash in an UltraSonic bath....

Without, \I would just use Fairy Liquid and a toothbrush, add lemon juice if you are going to use the toothbrush on yourself later :)

We had a Bodum food mixer with a similar finish and I think that I used isopropyl alcohol, although maybe I also used some contact adhesive solvent, as I remember it being a smelly process.

Well this seems like a pain in the harris to solve a very small oil leak..... ever wondered why you bother starting jobs !! ?

Looks like the whole intake manifold needs to be removed to take the rocker cover off....great !
Vac pipe crumbled...of course it did !....they all do that after 30 years Sir :).....and it may be that it was only the Vac pipe that was the source of the oil leak because.............

two of the rocker cover bolts were not even finger tight !..... which of course I found only AFTER the breather pipe crumbled

I believe it's a bug in the new forum software Alasdair. Some post counts are now in binary. So that actually was your 31st post...

and all back together again........all I did is cut and insert a new pipe to fix the breather pipe leak/split pipe end. A few pipe runs needed to be corrected/spacing clips added to prevent chaffing as it had not been put back together properly at some point.

1. I decided NOT to remove the cam cover because with the two outer cap screws tightened correctly I hope that will solve the leaking oil.
2. Not much is leaking anyway, it does not "cook" and oil is cheaper than a new gasket :)
3. It is a real pain to remove the intake manifold etc just to save a "little oil"
4. Taking into account No2&3....I really cannot be arsed !
5. Any oil spray is a good rust preventative
6. An old diesel traditionally has a small leak

Logic care of my mate with a LandRover collection :)

  Good points well made Alasdair although for me, even the tiniest of leaks would drive me insane and I'd be compelled to fix it. I note my Strawberry has a tiny weep from both ends of her crank. Not enough to drip but just enough to wet the surface slightly over time and needing of a watching brief...

Good fix on the breather pipe :D
