Umm....my bad I think. I really did not think about there being a difference DOGH !...what a thicko I am !

I have not removed the one from the car yet so will reset the broken control to the normal setting {fresh air in} and just live with it for now.

Saves a Job for now

Based on what that interior used to be like, the prospect of recirculating the human soup aromas doesn't sound appealing, I've got to be honest!! :rofl2:

OK.....so I am a Fixer not a F... err no, a Mender

Here is what I first thought was the problem..... just the little bit of plastic broken off the slider "knob"
20241111_094651.jpg
20241111_104221.jpg
So I removed that....NOPE, hot just that, Drat !
20241111_094738.jpg
and !!...booger ...typical !....I (with the unit still in the car) I removed the front cover and confirmed it was the metal slider extension that had broken.
20241111_100542.jpg
So Fix it rather than suffer it....
I had to remove (the later type spare unit shown) top gear wheel.....Note on the later one there is a "blank tooth" that allows the units gears to be lined up correctly.
20241111_090012.jpg
Under the top gear wheel
20241111_100945.jpg
The gear wheel and top slider are from the Later spare unit, the bottom slider shows the difference.....
I will replace the gear wheel and the slider with the later one to fix it.

That’s what was confusing me (us ? ) …so has your in-car unit got 4 control cables? I’m guessing it has as an air con model must only have 3 with one being replaced by some electrical temperature control unit :dunno:

Always good to see it lit Alasdair... I have need to do that in Strawberry - her heater panel bulbs are all out and so is one in her instrument cluster.

It's been far too long since I've had a Xantia; I forget they light up green! Far too used to the amber of my AXs and Picasso these days...

Great job Alasdair, I love to see a fix rather than the easy but expensive way of replacing entire units!! :-D
I used to be indecisive, now I'm not so sure!
I used to ride on two wheels, but now I need all four!

I had to Mick......no "early" heater units on my spares shelf :)....I was lucky that these units "developed" over time with most of the control gears/sliders etc being exactly the same throughout production....the extra functions were just added piggy-back stylie.

Had I see that LHD/RHD units were the same chassis behind the facia I would have ordered a cheap one from Spain............glad I fixed it however, as you said, always a good feeling to fix it rather than throw/replace.

Moving on....... replacement radio works......speakers are bu@@ered & will need replacing (Halfords cheepo here I come !)
20241112_095417.jpg
"Xantia Nerds" will note I have used the later facia plate with the --Auto- on the fan slide, the old one was brittle and 4 of the lower tabs were "open" and not holding well......

I can see MORE dirt & dust under the switches !

And the steering wheel controls work :)...which is a nice result.

....Dash all buttoned up today, all trim refitted.
....Rear screen call cleaned of old stickers, I left on the original dealer sticker and the Air-South West sticker, an Airline that went bust in 2010.
....Replaced the rear parcel shelf which was faded to blue....the new on has a blind and the original clips on the strings.
....Added cleaned carpets front and back.

NEXT:
.....the horrid Boot
.....have two (new-ish) tyres fitted and do the tracking (may wait post MoT for that)
....get it out of the garage, wash and quick polish, buff the rear lights back to a shine.
....replace the two failing side trims
....Pre MOT checks, if it passes book the MoT for the end of the week and see what it fails on :)

I can see the the end of the tunnel ahead but will not count the chickens that are silhouetted in light as they may cr@p on the bonnet

Knowing the car Alasdair, and knowing what you've done to it, I truly believe an MoT will be a mere formality...

It's going to be awesome to see the 'before' and 'after' photo gallery... From the one we took when we first set eyes on her to the one where we see her in all her polished glory, happily reborn and back on the road :D
