Well that is looking better.....smells OK as well. I have used a Ariel Washing Powder "Pod" diluted in a gallon of water as the final (of three) washes.....I now have the aroma of a Summers Breeze rather than Musty Garage and Old Sweat assaulting my nasal passages. I have a Air Fresh BOMB to use once everything is cleaned and dried.
One thing to remember, always clean out your air vents !

That really is looking like a different car from the one we found in the garage Alasdair, and don't forget you are cleaning value into it as well!!

I used to be indecisive, now I'm not so sure!
I used to ride on two wheels, but now I need all four!

More cleaning today.....rear all washed/wet-vac'ed....other than the boot that is it all cleaned now so Jim should feel less nauseous on his next visit.
Bonnet earth strap fixed, I put the straps broken off end into a large crimp fitting then filled that with solder...bolted back on. The radio needs a code.....which I do not have....but I do have a later one with an Aux input socket & I have the code for that. I will gift the old one to Jim (a cassette type) for him to experiment on in his dungeon or electrical monsters. Not sure if it is worth converting the old tape to Bluetooth as it may be that it has very poor quality output. Also at the same time I need to address this little problem......snapped off before I got the car, the cable is tight. I think I will have to replace the heater control unit itself which is a real PITA I think. That is all for the day...........

What a lovely old car
these MK1 xantias really were a big step up for Citroen when they came out back then. Your doing a brilliant job i really hope i get to see this car at a car show one day.

Re: Xantia 1.9TD....wake up and back on the road after 10 Years
Excellent work Alasdair
It's possible to decode the wireless but if I recall, the display is a bit 'iffy' so may not be worth it... I used to have the hooky software to do the decoding although it has to run in a Windows 95 Virtual Machine as it would not run on anything later!
The heater panel is nowhere near as much a PITA as it looks... You'll find some kinky bowden cables are at the heart of the problems with it, the recirculation flap is usually the one that suffers as the flap itself seizes up...
The car will be concours soon, going by how it's coming up so far, that interior is a real transformation!

Re: Xantia 1.9TD....wake up and back on the road after 10 Years
Thanks Husky......
Jim, ?? concours ??....NOT a chance
..........well maybe inside but the outside will still get the (maintain) the "ratty look"
Who knows about a decode on the cassette radio, I have never had any luck with the codes/internet.
I am assuming the other unit I have is a better quality one and TBH I do like a more modern radio in my cars if for nothing more than having a bluetooth phone/microphone and playing my music from my phone.
I was saving the spare radio to fit in my Activa for originality IF I ever (when) I sell it because I will have to stop driving in about 20 years
I have a spare heater control unit, but looking at it I cannot work out where one of the cables go.... I can see where 3 go.......but the 4th eludes me atm

One of the cable anchors for the controls is only visable/insertable when the control is in a certain positionStickyfinger wrote: 10 Nov 2024, 19:47 .... cannot work out where one of the cables go.... I can see where 3 go.......but the 4th eludes me atm

Re: Xantia 1.9TD....wake up and back on the road after 10 Years
"?" Does look like a clamp point for cable D but it looks like you'd need to remove the 3 screws holding the L shaped pcb in order to secure the locking clip and I DON'T remember having to do that last time I repaired one?

Re: Xantia 1.9TD....wake up and back on the road after 10 Years
?? Could this heater control unit be from the wrong type of Xantia Spec ??.....this car being a very early base spec car could it differ from later cars/cars with AirCon for example ??

Ah ... your photos of it in situ doesn't have "AUTO" on the fan speed or temperature setting digits range 18 - 22 - 26 ...maybe that is the problem? Is your photo of the internals a replacement or the original?

Re: Xantia 1.9TD....wake up and back on the road after 10 Years
I have seen 3 different control panels for S1 Xantia, there are 2 for cars with A/C, I think they both have an Auto on the speed control and the non-A/C car had 0-1-2-3 I think. Or maybe it was marked as per your pictures above.
