OK spot on - I'll do the fuel filter this weekend.

Until then it can sit feeling sorry for itself in the corner of the garage

I have borrowed my brothers 2010 F10 BMW 520d SE automatic, as he has gone to Hong Kong to visit his girlfriend's family and was not using it.

I was shocked how hard the suspension is in the BMW, and the steering is noticeably heavier. Got to say I greatly prefer thd C5!

To check the MAF just disconnect it and see if it stops your issues, if not it's not likely the MAF. As for diesel fuel filters do they need really replacing that often? It's not like old diesel engines sucking up crud from the fuel tank. Surely diesel fuel and the cars fuel tanks are well past that point.

There is a reason the filters are big old things....

Change the filter first but suspect the fuel pump pressure as well.

Being as the filter was cheap, and I have it already, I'll just get it changed.

The last few services are rather vague, so I have no idea when it was last done...

You also have to remember old fuel tanks where steel, so when water sat on top of the fuel flakes of rust flaked off, blocking the filter.

Stu do they have an in-tank strainer (as my petrol-engine Pugs and Cits have)?

I had problems with a Xantia cutting out under load (eg when I was on the wrong side of the road trying to pass a truck  ) - turned out to be a blocked strainer. (Think my use of E10 might have contributed - does BioDiesel also "clean" your fuel tank?).

BTW - water always sits on the bottom of the tank (not on top of the fuel) - petrol or diesel. Anyway, I'm sure Mr Clark's car has a plastic tank - it would be a long time since a PSA fuel tank was steel...

I had problems with water in the fuel tank of an Imp when it rained, tank at the front of the car. Frequent stops to drain the carb.
Put meths in the tank that was miscible with water and petrol. Seemed to work.

Ooops 😏, silly mistake oil FLOATS! , well it was early in the morning😴💤, but the issue is still the same, water use to corrode fuel tanks as they were made from steel.

THE SOLUTION!

Just to complete this thread; in case anyone else stumbles in with a similar issue.

The issue was indeed solved by changing the fuel filter. After changing the fuel filter I reset all the codes, took it up the road and I can now accelerate as hard as I want and the car will not come up with the engine management light.
