"Word/Phrase of the Day"

Post by NewcastleFalcon »

So is this going to be an FCF perennial topic, or a one post failure, you decide :-D. The English language is a beautiful thing, but so is the kaleidoscope of different languages from around the world. Something to enjoy and celebrate, and its not just English.

Two contenters for me in recent posts...
Notices what Have you Spotted
"Toodle-Pip" from Steve, but I know the phrase well and quite often use it for its glorious old-fashioned-ness,

...but the one I would select came from Jay-Bruce, simply because I had to look it up.

Jay-Bruce wrote: 23 Sep 2023, 14:19 Although, it must be said that I was maybe being somewhat panglosstic about the merits of filling the roof...
Has its origins in a character in this, and further back into Greek. Hands up if you know what it means without looking it up :-D

Didn't react when I saw it first but do recall reading Candide, about fifty years ago so details are somewhat hazy.

Doesn't mean anything to me on reading it, but breaking it down: pan generally refers to across the whole world or area, gloss means make shiny, tic being the 'doer' form. So something that makes everything shiny? :-D

An alternative to rose tinted glasses perhaps?

Having looked it up it seems that my approach to finding a Mk1 C5 petrol auto Exclusive with Sat Nav is somewhat panglosstic too!! :-D

Todays word of the day

Requires discovering and maybe a small amount of trial and error.
8 letters with the four letters in the middle....ie letters 3 to 6 being ORTC.
? ? ORTC ? ?
Try it its gettable and it isn't an obscure word, but very possibly, only one word in the English language fits. :-D

I thought immediately "Mortice" but then read the instructions. Should stop taking shortcuts.

In a similar vein...a new one to try (from Radio Newcastle where "Haggard hawks" ( https://www.haggardhawks.com/https://ww ... hawks.com/ ) appears with his word games feature every Tuesday and Thursday from 12.00)

Todays word of the day

Requires discovering and maybe a small amount of trial and error.
10 letters this time with the four letters in the middle....ie letters 4 to 7 being NDAB.
? ? ? NDAB ? ? ?
I haven't put my mind to it yet, and only one word in the English language fits. :-D

Neil

PS 12.38 I have the answer...so its gettable and it again isnt an obscure word
