thankyou all for your input, i think i could do with finding what powers the buzzer under the steering wheel as a last resort and snipping that, i can live with the message as the clock is almost unreadable anyway and any EML should show on the dashboard anyway.

They've not used a tilt switch like on the S2 Xantia to detect it being open have they? In which case it need not actively be anywhere near the latch.
Just a thought. Though I'd usually have expected issues if it was that sort of setup to manifest itself as failing to detect it as open than the opposite.
