'09 C5 stereo question

This unit is the RT4 and RT5 system and is made by Magneti Marelli
Main differences between RT4 & RT5 - RT5 has Bluetooth Hands Free, faster Navigation calculation and on C4 & C4 Picasso only, USB ports and a High-Res screen.

'09 C5 stereo question

Post by Milordas »

Hi, maybe someone had similar problem as me and can help. I have citroen c5 x7 with RT4 system. The sound quality is poor and it seems that front speakers almost have no sound. If I put my ear to the front speaker I can hear It, but Its very quiet. I tried to play with sound settings, but it didn't help at all. Can I do something on my own to fix that? I'm a little lost tbh...

The first thing I would do is check the connections at the speakers and also behind the Head unit where the speaker inputs go, in case the wiring or the connector has come loose.

To remove the head unit I need special set of keys? Is that correct?

Just order pair of these. Do you know how to remove speakers cover? I tried, but it was very hard even to make a small gap so I didn't force it. Maybe it comes off only with door panel?

No, the speakers are a unit, and removed after the door card panel is removed. Once the speaker is out there should be a housing remaining. Whether you can remove the cover then or not I can't say.

Just removed the head unit and noticed that this purple connector is not in line with other two on the right. It's not loose (all other connectors are solid too), but it won't go all the way down like the others. Might this be a problem?

No it's the GSM aerial - as long as it is in its socket, just leave it.

Is the sound form the speakers the same volume when you change music sources? I.e. is the volume the same when you change from radio to CD to Jukebox?

If the volume is low on all the sources, and you have checked that the fader and balance are all normal, and all the connectors and wiring connections, then it may be that the RT4 is faulty - like the internal amplifier, assuming the speakers haven't been blown.

Yes, the speakers volume stays the same in all sources except CD. I will test that after work. If the RT4 is faulty i'll have to decide if I want to upgrade it to RT6 or Android.
Do you know if RT6 will work on old screen from RT4? Changing both gonna cost about 700€ for used ones.

That will depend on the screen fitted to your vehicle as the RT4 supported both Standard definition and Hi resolution screens. The RT6 however will only operate with the High res screen.

Also, just one other obvious thing I forgot to mention - temperature. If the unit is overheating the first thing it does is reduce the amplifier power to reduce heat output which will result in a loss of volume. This would be understandable in the current temperatures in some locations - and given the that the RT4 is a small single DIN with HDD with limited space internally for air circulation, it could be another factor to consider - although I would expect the unit to return to normal volume output when temperatures were lower.

Well temperature doesn't effect sound quality. It's not so warm in the morning.
I went to audio workshop and they told me that my amplifier is on its way to heaven and that this is the reason why front speakers are silent and poor quality.
They offered me aftermarket amplifier. But I'm not sure I want to go that way. What is your opinion on this? Maybe i should replace it with used original amp?
