Re: The June Jolly
Beamish is well worth the trip, there is something there for everyone. We stay at the Scotch Corner Travelodge or Skeeby just down the road as its quieter there. It only takes about 1/2 hour to get to to Beamish.
I went to Mathewsons a couple of years ago and met Derek, very nice chap. I said I would like to have seen his museum, I think he is using it for extra storage. When I mentioned Lyme Regis he said we used to go on holiday down there and said as I had come such a long way he would take me up there and he did.

A few pics I took.

Re: The June Jolly
Really great to meet you yesterday Skull
I'm so looking forward to today's adventures! A massive highlight yesterday was seeing, for the very first time, the magical North Yorkshire Moors Mick devised a superb route up to here
I'm now going for a run to get the day started

Re: The June Jolly
I think Durham put on a reasonable show for Jim and Mick this evening, and a nice meal back at the Worm at the world's stickiest table. After perusing the route home planned by Mick, I think they are going to be in for a Northern Counties treat, up Weardale, then down through Wensleydale before turning South.
Thoroughly enjoyable meet-up, Mick and Jim appreciate your venturing North to make it happen!
You will have better more photogenic pictures of Durham but this is a gem of Brutalist Architecture, and a Bridge which was the regarded by Ove Arup as one of his finest

Interesting warning in the hotel car park!
I used to be indecisive, now I'm not so sure!

A quick refreshment break in Hawes before checking out the rope makers!

Me too Peter, not to mention the driving!! Sadly I have to report that the ropemakers has ceased trading!! Now looking round Hawes old station prior to heading across to Leyburn then down to Ripon and back to civilisation for the run home!!

Re: The June Jolly
It's Friday, we're back home and I'm already missing what was an absolutely magical three days in June
In fact, magical is not a big-enough superlative for just how bloody awesome those three days were..
The top highlight was meeting Skull and Neil (Newcastle Falcon) for the first time and seeing Steve (Myglaren) after far too many years
Steve joined us at Beamish and walked what I estimate a good 12 miles with Mick and I to every corner of the museum
Beamish was way above all expectations I had. It's truly awesome in every way.
Here's a few photos from our visit..

After Beamish, Neil gave us a tour of Durham. My expectation of Durham was the absolute opposite of what it is...
My biggest 'Wow' of the trip was my first sight of the magnificence of Durham Cathedral...
Durham truly is a most surprisingly (to me) beautiful place... After Durham, we enjoyed a long and chatty evening meal with Neil
A few photos of Durham...

Mick planned a most amazing route up and back that took in some true wonders: the Humber Bridge, Pickering, Thornton Le Dale (Matthewson's), and the North Yorkshire Moors on the outbound leg and on the homeward-bound leg, some true wonders across stunningly beautiful vistas and roads between Durham and Penrith, the Settle and Carlisle Railway and the very best of the Yorkshire Dales. It was an utter wowfest from start to end Included was seeing the AA Box at Aysgarth, Hardraw Force and Howes...
Some photos taken during the journey are here:

This album also contains a few I took whilst out on two hugely enjoyed early morning runs. Mainly along the old railway line between Sunderland that once carried massively big trainloads of ore and coal from Tyneside to the Consett Steelworks...
I've really fallen in love with the North East and Yorkshire
And last but not least, Huge thanks to Mick for making this all possible, being a supurb tour guide, fantastic driver and being a generally being absolutely top and great company
The three days passed all too quickly but will remain in my memory for ever and a true highlight
Mick's Subaru Legacy performed brilliantly. A real cracker of a car
