Mullard used to have a factory next to the A1M by the Carrville turn off for Durham making Cathode Ray Tubes. Bit of a landmark as the turn off for home was approaching.
The demand for TV grew at such a rate that a new CRT factory was needed, Mullard Durham was built in 1971 and opened by Ted Heath. At its peak in 2002 they made about 3.4 million Colour CRT's employing some 1500 people. Mullard Washington, the original Washington and not the USA version, was built to make Deflection Yokes. This factory made about 16 million DY's p.a. exporting them to many Philips CRT factories all over the World; they even made a special one and sold them to Sony

U is for Usworth

Never heard of it :?: The backbone of the UK Car Industry is sited at the Former RAF Usworth by the side of the A19.
Yes we aren't talking about our whinger friends Stellantis but Nissan.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RAF_Usworth

Fresh from a named-brick planter in le jardin chez Falcon we have an upside down "Usworth" brick no less, unique in the United Kingdom and the rest of the world. As they say in the car cliché business, "find another one!".

We used to be able to watch the 'planes landing and taking off from out lounge window (upstairs lounge) from Usworth Airfield, mostly biplanes. Also the skydivers. Long gone now although the aircraft museum is still there, with a Vulcan in it.

Wow! Never knew that about the Mullard CRT factory Neil :) I was only ever aware of their big valve factory in Blackburn...

Blackburn-made ECC83, EL84 and EL34 valves are now much sought-after by the golden-eared audio brigade and they will pay eye-watering amounts for them! Especially if they have yellow printing on them...

I have a few stashed away ;)

Couple of "U"'s from Berwick-Upon-Tweed

I wonder how many genuine "Upon"s there are. :?:

"The Few" so far!
Berwick-Upon-Tweed
Newcastle-Upon-Tyne of course to give it its full moniker.
Kingston-Upon-Hull, Barton-Upon-Humber, Burton-Upon-Trent, Kingston-Upon-Thames, Staines-Upon-Thames, Stratford-Upon-Avon, Upton-Upon-Severn, Wath-Upon-Dearne

The coat of arms for Berwick features a play on words with a Bear and a Witch Hazel tree to portray Berwick. Back to Latin and we have Ursidae as the family name for Bears. Magdalene Fields Golf Club has the Bear and the tree on their notices.

Ok - I'd better get cracking before Jim wakes up and switches to "V".

I've remembered the word "Ungulate", which I thought was a word for cows, buffalo etc. Turns out it covers all cloven hoofed animals, plus single hoof creatures (horses and donkeys). More surprisingly, it also covers whales and dolphins, as apparently they all evolved from a hoofed mammal that took up an aquatic lifestyle. So this allows me to artificially inflate the amount of space occupied by the letter "U" :).

Common Dolphin (seems a rather derogatory name for such a beautiful creature)

And we're onto day V and for me, V is very much about volunteering. I do a lot of it, not least at parkrun, and I also organise volunteers as part of my volunteering activities

Being a bit of a Rugby fan Brumbies translates for me as the ACT Brumbies and a particularly close encounter with the British and Irish Lions in 2001. Didn't know Brumbies were feral horses!
------------------------
I think "V-Day" should prove particularly fertile ground, so lets get as many contributions as we can.

I'll start of mine with a couple of posts. The first here about the finest bus livery in the entire world for me.
The Venture Bus Company Consett County Durham. We have to rely on the enthusiasts and old pictures now, the company has been amalgamated out of all recognition. These days the graphics available for buses can have absolutely anything on them. The old venture bus route now has a Red Kite's head on the front as red kites have been very successfully re-introduced to the Derwent Valley.

For me the simple colour scheme of the old Venture bus Company tops the lot.
