...better known of course for the film "Kes" a wonderful film from the early 70's.

Well Greg Davies has done a documentary called "Greg Davies: Looking for Kes" its on BBC Four Iplayer just now. Worth a watch if like me you have an affection for that film.

Come on, it was set in Yorkshire, Barnsley to be precise.. :offtopic:

But hang on I wonder where the phrase "A kestrel for a Knave" comes from...
Image
There it is...a kesterell for a knafe

The novel’s title is taken from a poem found in the Book of Saint Albans(1468) "The Book of Hawking, Hunting, and Blasing of Arms". In medieval England, the only bird a knave (male servant, or man of low class) was legally allowed to keep was a kestrel.

Juliana Berners
Juliana Berners is mentioned in the 1486 edition, but little is known about her life. She is said to have been the Benedictine prioress of the Priory of St. Mary of Sopwell, near St Albans in Hertfordshire. She was probably born into the nobility, which would explain her level of education and her love of field sports. It is not clear how much of The Book of Saint Albans was written by Juliana Berners, but she is most commonly associated with the treatise on hunting.

Wonder if any trace remains of the Priory of St Mary of Sopwell :?:

Since you've all gone to bed, I'll chime in with potentially the last 'K'. The photos I am putting up for this thread will hopefully all come from recent cruises around Australia's North coast. We live in the SE, so the whole of northern Australia is terra incognito to us (CitroJim probably knows the the tropical North better than us, as he lived in Darwin for some years).

This is the seed pod for kapok, which I assume many of you are familiar with as stuffing for pillows, mattresses, sleeping bags, upholstery etc. (pre-synthetics of course). Grows wild all around the tropical northern coast. This was taken on an island off N Queensland.

Onto my "L" selection
NewcastleFalcon wrote: 14 Apr 2021, 09:21

Time to correct a major internet worldwide shortage.

There is only one picture on the entire internet of a late 70's Lancia Beta Coupe in Verde Finlandia so I have photographed my photographs of mine which there appear to be only two!

Image

The interior was just a touch garish, very probably tasteless, but interesting :-D

Luckily Tony Harrison on flickr has preserved a photo of it for future generations to enjoy

L is for Limerick
There was a young fellow called Dave
Who bought an old van feeling brave
He fixed all the trouble
And threw out the rubble
Now think how much money he'll save!
I used to be indecisive, now I'm not so sure!
I used to ride on two wheels, but now I need all four!

Every single "traditional" County of the United Kingdom got its FCF day in the spotlight, all 92 of them. A terrific selection of random posts for each and every one of them from the gathered wisdom and quirkiness of the FCF congregation of contributors.

Lanarkshire, Lancashire, Leicestershire, Lincolnshire, and Londonderry

Litter.
Litter on a beach.jpg
Not likely to be anyone's favourite subject, and I'm sure Jim will be dismayed to see it, because this is a beach near to Gove (Nhulunbuy) - a mining town on the Northern Territory coast (Australia). Not just an isolated patch, this stuff extends all along the beach.

Inevitably some of this garbage will be from local sources, but the vast majority has come from S E Asia, pushed south by winds and currents until it lands on Northern Australian beaches.
