Wasn't thinking of the ESP Gyrometer / Accelerometer Jay, as that's in the front of the cabin gearbox binnacle.

I was thinking of this one:

Thought it might be an external housing to protect it - LDS Pressure Sensor:

I can only find one picture of it in the workshop manual PDFs, it seems to be missing on the other pictures. This picture came from the 'Removing - refitting rear suspension' section.

It's quite a way underneath, and doesn't work if so! (Mind you I get "beep, beep" + complete lack of electric opening + large sigh + heave the damn thing open manually more often than I'd like. Will have to do Marc's battery monitor thing modification that defers Economy Mode Active a bit longer at some point. )

It's the wireless monitor for the girdle spring that's part of the turbo encabulator. To be honest - I thought they'd phased those out years ago

Curioser and curioser. I doubt if this anomaly is relevant, but it's not shown on this image with the engine options shown in the picture.

Hey! I've already explained why I took terrible photos, I thought the car might sit in my head if I faffed about too long under there! :rofl2:

Pretty sure there's a wire on mine, in usual ribbed cable protection sleeving

It's probably something totally obvious like the spare wheel fixing bolt - and that pyramid is a cover to stop the bolt rusting or water getting into the boot.

It's just the sort of thing PSA would do - protect a poxy bolt whilst leaving the critical hydraulic pipes with as much protection as a belly dancer with a 'G' string.

Sorry, off topic really, but whilst you've triggered a thought:

X7 Tourer, is there anything that holds the spare wheel down? Literally nothing but the lift up boot floor above on mine, seems odd!?!

On your specific X7 Matt, you have the following:

Items (1) the Spare Wheel Fixing Plate and (2) Spare Wheel Support Fixing Bolt
matt wheel.PNG
It's what I was referring to earlier about the pyramid maybe being some protection if the bolt extends through the floor.

... and as Bobins has posted that part up - the white area in the centre of the round wheel moulding that he posted up would be where the parts above would be attached.

Thanks Marc,

I'll say "not anymore I don't!" no sign of anything like that (looks familiar, my old C4 had the sliding base, plastic bolt type thing) no obvious fixing holes where that might have once resided either.

There are two brackets 180° apart on the sides of the well, but no obvious remnants of anything on those either. I have in mind my 406 Coupe which had a couple of nylon webbing straps that meet in a very feeble erm, one of these:
Bum bag buckle!

but nothing even like that on my X7

I think you're referring to this lot, which is also supposed to be included when new for your vehicle:
