No, that's a bladed type flip key above, the blade is just folded in. The blade fittings are all the same so you can fit a Ford, Vauxhall, VW or whatever you want type blade. There are proximity/keyless versions too. In fact the keyles versions you can get a watch that becomes the universal key. The main ones are made by Xhorse, KD & Autel.
They dont work with every car out there but i reckon they can be used on around 80% of the cars out there just now.

The one below is a DS style universal currently used on my car.
Image
That is what I have for my Civic :)

Annoying when I inadvertently press the middle button, it does nothing.
You can get that style in the 2 or 3 button variants, the one in my pic is actually only a 2 button version so the bit in the middle isn't actually a button. Some people only stock the 3 button versions as they can also be used on 2 button cars, sometimes depending on the car the 3rd button actually does something when you program it to a car that was originally 2 button.

Hi, were you able to put the blade from your original Peugeot key in the new key housing or will it not fit?

No, the OEM blades wont work with these. the blades are a different fitting at the bottom on these keys but they are all the same no matter which type of blank you use or what design of remote you use.

I'm still confused about these universal keys. Searching on Ebay doesn't bring up much that I can comprehend. I get offered multiple uncut key blades for Citroens and fobs for VWs and Audis but nothing I could confidently pick and stand a good chance of getting to work. I really don't understand this.

It’s actually a very simple system once you get used to it but yes it can take a bit to get your head round. There are 3 main makes
KD, Xhorse & Autel. The Autel ones dont seem to be as popular & i have never personally used them so we will forget about them just now.
First you need the blade. Both KD & XH use the same blade fitments. All the blade blanks have the same fitment at the bottom so any KD/XH blank blade will fit in any KD or XH remote.
KD only do 3 remote types
B series, NB series & ZB series.
B series are a remote only for cars that use a seperate transponder chip & the remote & transponder program seperately. You need to add a transponder chip to these.
NB series is a remote with a built in transponder chip that programs at the same time as the remote (this is the type that you would use on the majority of PSA cars).
ZB series are proximity/smart remotes for push button start models.
There are only 3 remote types but they are available in lots of different design cases to match the look of OEM remotes. So just because it looks like a VW remote doesent mean is for a VW, there would be nothing stopping you from programming it to a vauxhall or citroen.
If you are looking at buying one you would also need a tool to generate the remote to the type you want first before programming it.
So if i wanted to do a Mk3 C5 i would first get an HU83 KD blade, an NB series remote with whatever design remote i like then generate that as an ID46 ASK remote and then program it in as normal with whatever key programmer i use.

What is the tool to generate the remote into the type you want?

Is it possible to generate the remote as an ASK type and then change it to an FSK type if that's wrong?

For KD remotes you would need a KD-X2 or I believe there is also a lead that plugs straight into your phone & used the app.
For XH remotes you would need a VVDI key tool mini.

Yes you can re generate the remotes as many times as you like, it unlocks the chip so you can even re use them on a completely different car even after they have been programmed.

I wasn't really, I just wanted to learn about these things. Thinking about it my daughter has a 2013 Hyundai i30 with only one key. Would that be a good place to start?

Yes you can do that car using these. First you would need a KIA7/HY22 key blade. This car uses a separate transponder chip so you would need a KD B series remote (There is a Hyundai 3 button lookalike available). You would also require a separate ID46 transponder chip. As you currently have a working key you could clone your original chip (this can also be done with the KD-X2) meaning you could start the car without needing to program in the new chip (this would also mean you dont need the security code). Unfortunately the remote needs to be programmed diagnostically on these, there is no manual procedure.

Thanks for your time on this to satisfy my curiosity Wheeler. I think it'd cost too much for just one key! But if I were to go into the key business it would make better financial sense.

I had only one key for the Civic, which wasn't ideal as my son uses the car more than I do but lives half a mile away.
Had one cut by a mobile locksmith, took him about an hour and cost £130, which was very reasonable as Honda wanted £300.
Includes a fully functioning remote of course.
