More problems unfortunately...
The garage had (with some foresight) added a dye to the refrigerant. This quite quickly showed the problem when exposed to UV light - My condenser is leaking!
They claimed that as it was such a slight leak, this is the reason for them not picking up the fault.
I was a little distraught, and left it at that (especially after discovering the repair is in the region of £400).
Looking at the condenser it seems obvious that it has been that way for some time! I intend to assert my rights to the dealer (as he sold me a car with a/c less than 6 months ago) under the sale of goods act and see what happens...

Although failing this I've found I can get a condenser for £110 + Vat, Is it possible / advisable to fit this myself (as this seemed to be the main labour intensive part of the job, although it doesn't look to bad to me) and then get it checked / re-gassed later at a garage?

Hi
You can work on a DEPRESSURISED air con system yourself, e.g. One that has had all the gas/liquid removed.
But I WOULDNT recomended it!
BUT REMEMBER: DO NOT SMOKE! EXPLOSIVE RISK! FROST BITE RISK!
DO NOT GET ANY LIQUID ON YOUR SKIN! FROST BITE RISK!
You WILL be better off finding someone who knows what there doing ( Not the garage you have been using ) to fix this for you.
The liquid/gas itself isnt nasty, Its when it mixes with your skin, lungs or a fag your smoking that your in trouble.

OK - I get the feeling I should leave this to someone else to sort out!

I managed to get a full refund on a car on the 6-month rule, no quibbles (OK, a 10 minute discussion, but nothing more). This is one bit of legislation which has helped us punters! Take it back, and request (don't demand yet) that they fix it; you can even tell them exactly what the problem is. If they try the "it'll take us a while" trick, tell them that this place will do it for £400 immediately; do they want the phone number???

Yes - unfortunately, my dealer got quite abusive - having to resort to a stiffly worded letter!!

Don't forget to copy it to the local Trading Standards as well...and put it on the letter as a CC: The one you send to Trading Standards must be the same as you send to the dealer, just add a covering letter to TS with the story so far. Good Luck!
BTW, it was at about 4 months I got the refund; there had been faults with it since I got it which had't been successfully fixed, but the law is on your side. Stick to your guns!

Thanks for the advice - I was going to ring the CAB / Trading standards tomorrow, and someone else said to take a look at the "whatcar" or "which" website as they have standard template letters for this sort of thing!

R134a refridgerant isnt flamible or explosive however if exposed to heat or naked flame it can produce a very poisinous gas.
