In the space available for this job it was probably an advantage without the handle Matt! :-D That was the passive end of the hammer blows a sort of temporary anvil. Do need to get a new handle though, but I am a club hammer handle shopping virgin so the links may assist. I have at least two pick axes without handles too, not much good as proper pick axes, but its surprising how often the head on its own is a useful tool in its own right.

Best use I have found for a hammer so far is when it comes to Allen keys fitting!

I bought a new handle for my sledge hammer, it's been used as a slide hammer for years, now with the new handle I can't swing it, at 14lbs it's too heavy for my old muscles. :(
