I pulled the new turbo and it was definitely leaking oil Into the compressor side. There was no play in the shaft as I said but when I rotated the shaft there was a clinking which indicates one of the piston rings on the shaft was loose inside it. It's gone back to the seller in Germany today. I don't think I would use them again the customer support and service is pretty crap. Hopefully I can get it resolved quickly.

Darren,

Was your old turbo used as part exchange for the 'new' turbo ?

If so what will be your plan. Another new unit or refurbished unit.

Hi Kenny, old recon turbo gone back yesterday the old turbo was to be part exchange for remanufactured unit. Seller should have it on Monday or Tuesday and will check it.

I have pulled out the smoke machine and tested the head I have a significant leak on the intake side of cylinder 3 . Looks like a bad valve possibly burnt. I recorded a video of it I also have some leaks on the egr pipe to the intake. This can all be seen in the video. It's about 2 mins long but if you start watching around 1 min in you can see it clearly. I will post it when I have it on youtube.

It's certainly smokin'!

Looks like head off to look at valve. New gasket for EGR.

Good luck Darren I will be watching this thread with interest.

Hi Kenny, Yeah it's leaking in cylinder 3. This all started with injector three jamming which led to the saga so I think this was what caused the injector to fail in the first place. I need to focus more on cause in future. If it's not obvious when I pull the head, I think I will bring to an engine builder that I used in the past. Something strange is happening in that cylinder. I'll have to re gasket egr. At least I know I am going in the right direction.

Hi Kenny scratch that I done my test wrong. That cylinder must be in its intake stroke. I will retest later when the rain stops. The cylinder being tested must be at top dead centre for the test to work. I'll have to get a coat hanger and use it to determine tdc for each of the cylinders. I'll post up later.

Ok so redone the test all valves are good no smoke leaks at TDC. Crank case test was good as well so happy the engine itself is healthy the problem is the turbo I believe at this point.
Edit: just to add the smoke test is like a leak down test in that it uses compressed air to push the smoke past a bad seal. Instead of removing glow plugs which on this engine is a nightmare you remove the injectors and pump smoke into the intake if smoke passes a valve it will come through the injector port of that cylinder. For the crank case you block off the PCV and any other possible leakage points and pump smoke in through the oil filler. If rings are leaking you will get smoke through injector port or/intake. It doesn't give a value but it does pinpoint the issue if there is one.

Seller says nothing wrong with turbo but sending me a different unit. BS I think, why send a different unit if the one you sent is good 🤔. I'm waiting on tracking number so just waiting now. The Primera has decided it's exhaust has had enough, I've got one sourced in a breakers about 30 miles away I can't be bothered buying a new one for a car I am getting rid of sooner rather than later. I just never got attached to it for some reason.they are great cars super reliable and require very little maintenance in comparison to cits

Right I got a new exhaust and a better link for the rear of the primera and it now has decided to let go of the drivers regulator. So that's my weekend sorted.
New turbo should here tomorrow and I have the dpf off the c5 and ready for cleaning. I am going to to do a chemical clean with dishwasher tablets and a weak brick acid soloution. There is a lot of soot in it I couldn't see if there was much ash. I'll post up again when I make more progress.

Well the new turbo is here and it seems a lot tighter than the last one. When I shake it doesn't sound like a piggy bank so a big improvement. No play in the shaft either so not too bad. I plan to steep the Dpf tonight, I won't get to fit turbo until next because I need to work on the Primera.
