The CD is not coming up against your vehicle, and the only one I can see that is compatible with the electronic architecture and build date is part: 1629118180, £328.02
Searching for 1629118180 on eBay brings results, e.g.

14-19 PEUGEOT 308 MK2/CITROEN C4 MK2/DS4 CD PLAYER HEAD UNIT 9805593680

So brief update, but more research to be done:

Marc has updated to let me know he's found some other info and has a different part number recommended for the CD drive:

No problem at all, I don't know how you manage to keep up with all the requests that come flying your way as it is!
There's no physical jukebox Matt, it's a feature of some Head Units that would allow you to copy a CD (rip a CD if you like) when inserted, to the Hard Drive on the older units that had Hard Drives, to save swapping CDs all the time. It's not available on the SMEG units as they don't use HDD,s only flash memory and space is likely limited.

The CD Fascia and CD Harness are only available and shown on the Accessories section for your car, for those wanting one which was not factory supplied and fitted.
More interesting info, spot on, thank you
Matt - Urgent! Please ignore previous advice regarding the CD Player itself. I have just had another look in a different section of the accessories and can see that the specific CD player for your vehicle is part: 1610916280, £185.58

Here is the entire listing for reference:

Hope that sorts it. The reference for the CD I previously gave is likely not compatible as it will be for RD4 or one of the other Head Units, so please use part reference 1610916280.
Interestingly this is a much more tolerable brand new price!

Had a quick look based on the alternative number and it's a bit weird what I've found.

Searching eBay for 1610916280

Gives:
eBay search results
eBay search results
In detail, for example top of the list. Item specifics states:
£49.99 item, specifics
£49.99 item, specifics
But I'm not sure where this number is coming from!
Sticker on the item itself states:
Sticker on item
Sticker on item
Which aligns with the number in the listing title:
14-19 PEUGEOT 308 MK2/CITROEN C4 MK2/DS4 RADIO/CD PLAYER HEAD UNIT 9805593680
Clear as mud!

Just for clarity: I've no poor opinion at all on the very kindly provided information from Marc on the parts thread.

But I am a bit befuddled, at what the link between the numbers is that the eBay sellers seem to be able to make!

This item, away from eBay makes the same leap between numbers too:

Going to sleep on it! :-D

From the sticker on what I've bought (not arrived yet)
Lecteur CD
MODEL NO. PU-39168
PSA REFERENCE NO. 9805593680-02
SW VERSION. Ver 06 32
HW VERSION. 039-3745-00
CD DRIVE VERSION. GSIR
PROTOTYPE STAGE. D11-
12V GROUND
Hopefully it'll arrive soon and I can have a play. Dashboard panel has arrived, very well wrapped. Middle/face of the volume button is absent (was on the pictures) but will see if I can buy it separately/make something/pull it off the current panel. eBay reckons due today or tomorrow but also says "seller dispatching item" (i.e. not identified as entered the delivery network - Royal Mail - as yet)

Other 308 hopeful upgrade, the CD changer, has reached Preston so that too might land with me today.

Hi Matt

Just got notified of this via quoting me.

From experience, I strongly suggest that you stick to the OEM recommended units for the SMEG system. Part and product numbers can become confusing, because Clarion (who make these) have their own model number (in this case PU-3916B). Although the PSA reference quoted on the unit is the same, the revision of the correct unit has a '-02' revision and later Prototype Stage (D11) revision.

This may be because of the later vehicle and Head Unit compatibility - but I can't say for sure, but they are different models, and all I can say is that why bother making another unit with a different model reference if they are identical?

Anyway, PU-3916B is the recommended one under part 1610916280 and as you can see has a different Clarion part from the one in your picture (bottom right corner of label).

As an aside, I'm emailing you the official installation guide PDF for the CD in case it helps.

Hi Marc,

Sorry I copied and pasted the quoted post completely - didn't think about it effectively "Tagging" you by doing that!

But anyway you've responded with yet more good information!

Ok will get hunting based on those numbers. It's odd I've not found a single 161.... Part number CD player as yet, all seems to be 98...

In other news, the CD changer, potentially to fit into the Grey 308 has also arrived. It's particulars are as follows:
Label

Here's the front (yes my 3 year old is just about to "clean it" with a hair brush!!)

Microsoft seemingly not getting any royalties from this one!

A semi educated guess tells me that the chances are that back in the annals of time Clarion subcontracted the writing of the software to Microsoft as a reputable software company. As a result Microsoft would more than likely have retained the IP rights to the software and that notice would be a contractual obligation on Clarion!! :-D
