Ok, 406 coupe: boot carpet (or boot floor? Not sure what best to call it. Carpet, but reinforced to be a lift up panel when spare wheel access needed) rather "floppy" unpicked the stitching and teased apart carpet glue from - a really rather dog eared piece of hardboard. Have about a 2/3 sheet of 6mm plywood so a chunk of that will be the new version.

206:

Strange behaviour: driving normally then ABS light, then EBD light/warning. Then off again, then back again.
One instance when it actually seemed to be rather determinedly slowing the car down (brake pedal NOT touched, accelerator increasingly shoved in response to odd car behaviour!) So a 28 mile trip to work in it seems inadvisable!
Will plug in the laptop and see what reported.

C5: what I'm reasonably confident is the FRIP bearing clunk is getting a bit more prevalent, so need to make time for that job (and the nearby lower arm bush at same time), occasionally few little odd stumbles but otherwise it soldiers on ok. No tip run this weekend unusually, busy family stuff.

206, Peugeot planet:

P0401
P0409

I thought the 206 (2004) loaded Diagbox but seems to want Peugeot Planet instead.

C5 it's had a bit of a "whirring bearing noise" of late, crept up on my really and much more noticeable outside the car (or with the window open)

Coming home tonight it seems to have very much stepped up a notch in volume, so suspect something handing it's notice in shortly!

Candidates as follows:
Auxiliary belt tensioner pulley bearing.
Pulley was noisy when I bought the car, new pulley fitted from eBay 13th march 2022. Rather sad if that's dead already but equally it was £7.69 Inc delivery so perhaps "buy cheap: buy twice" has kicked in there...

alternator bearings
Has just tripped over 147,000 miles on way home, perhaps the bearings in this have had enough. Previously my 306 had noisy alternator bearings (was still charging fine) maybe C5 has same? Second hand £22 alternator (from a 407) sat in garage ready to go (bought when I wondered if my headlight brightness varying with power steering pump load was normal - but not fitted at the time.

timing belt tensioner pulley bearings
Don't want to think about this option! Belt and pulleys about 13 months old, Autodoc, decent brand: Dayco kit, included water pump.

With all the modern kit I have Matt I've never found a better way to track down a bearing noise than the long screwdriver in the ear and touched onto each of the potential areas. Seldom do you not get an obvious clue where your noise source is!! :)

Alternator pulley is
OD: 65mm
ID: 17mm
Width: 25.5mm.

Will look ok if I have a spare: I fitted a 6203 (ZZ type) to a couple of plastic pulleys as an experiment, cant recall if one if those was 65mm OD

A good shout Mick! Was on the cards for this evening but blooming miserable weather has put me off!

I've an "mechanics stethoscope" but use a screwdriver on the occasions when my garage "filing system" gets in the way of locating the stethoscope! :rofl2:

Stethoscope test done this morning, not hugely conclusive:

Alternator and tensioner are very close to one another, almost bolted together - hence sound from one travels to and through the other.
I think it is alternator bearings, certainly a "scream" from here via stethoscope.
Tensioner similar but less prominent.

So think it's alternator.

A look in the garage has found (the elusive stethoscope and) the old 65mm pulley I took some of the centre from on the lathe, pushed out the old bearing and glued in a fresh one a year ago.

Yes that is what I meant about despite my modern equipment which includes various sound detecting equipment from a conic stethoscope to a fully electronic probe and headphones, I still find the good old long shafted screwdriver the best at pinpointing the source!! I literally only place the corner of the tip of the blade on each part and can detect sound levels much more accurately than the £80 electronic set!! :-D

Nice work Matt, as a point of interest I use the K2 alloy cleaner on heavily soiled wheels, spray on leave until whole wheel gone purple and jetwash off. Worked fine on the backs of my last C5!! :-D

Thanks Mick, I might seek out some of that for future use.
I've also heard good things about "TFR" traffic film remover as fairly heavy duty muck shifter, not tried that either as yet.

Certainly pressure washer alone, even with it's most aggressive attachment at close range doesn't lessen this in any meaning way, it's grim stuff!

Ah those "bleeding" type products, interesting, thanks

Just a reminder, K&N lifetime filter= does need a clean!
