Yes, I've got to be honest - I am a bit concerned about the magnitude of the violence needed to get the ball joint to come loose even with the correct tools!

3 foot breaker bar and 2-and-a-bit foot piece of gas pipe to hand here = sounding barely enough! Plus obviously I've got only half the equation there as obviously I need to hold the hub still whilst unleashing fury at the ball joint!

On the possible "new" car research:

207 SW, the outdoor models have higher rise height 20mm. Some reviews say this is a negative to the 207's handling, others say it's no different!
Most of the 110 bhp HDi seem to be £160 / year tax though Parkers thinks some 110 are £35. Likewise some 112 are higher, some are lower.

5008
Not a Euro 6 model, but I'm quite in favour of the light coloured interior and (leather?) seats of this example:
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/126519754392
2.0 HDi, £2500. No towbar.

Yes me too - that's pretty much on the essentials list now! Thankfully most 5008 have them

Advisory notice item(s)
Front Brake pad(s) wearing thin (3.5.1g)
What are advisories?
Pretty local (an hour away)
Smaller 17" wheels rather than the 18" (with the odd tyre sizes) - hopefully also of benefit to ride quality too.

Negatives:
Interesting "adornments" in the interior!?! Hopefully they'd all pull off. Hopefully the wheel handle knob thing hasn't bitten into the actual wheel under the cover.
No towbar at present.
Leather, particularly drivers seat wants a good condition/clean.
No sat nav and more basic stereo: not too bothered.

Edited above to add in some thoughts and the MOT history (from here: https://www.check-mot.service.gov.uk/re ... calls=true )

Think one fail (for a side light bulb) and a couple of advisories for brakes nearing end of service life is pretty good going!

That interior looks.... ummmmm..... lovely #-o
As for satnav, I never use inbuilt ones on older cars, I just use Waze on the phone. It's very useful if the car has Carplay or Android Auto integration, but failing that, a phone on a holder works well :-D

Yes, I think I'd likely be pulling bits of it off during the ride home to be honest! Ah well, apart from the weird white things (one front passenger side, one next to driver) I don't think anything else is permanently nailed into the car, so hopefully soon dealt with.

I've never got into Waze, keep meaning to try it. Have a cheap Garmin thing on the usual screen sucker. No traffic capabilities but works well enough for my needs.

I have used the 406 Coupe's built in sat nav a good few times. It's only 22 years out of date, has a tiny screen nowhere near your eye line and often gives a "disk not readable" warning. It also has an interesting accent and says something hilarious like

"Hello and have a safe trip" when you switch it on! Makes me chuckle every time! :)

On the satnav front, I only use it locally as I can navigate my way to more or less anywhere with in built knowledge in the UK or a preview of the map if going further afield. So if I had to visit somewhere in say Salford I'd drive to Salford using what SWMBO calls my resident satnav and then stop to enter the actual address I need in the car's inbuilt satnav which has 2018 maps (latest available) and let it guide me the last few miles. Of course I do occasionally have an issue with new builds etc but then there is always the phone in such rare circumstances!! :-D
I used to be indecisive, now I'm not so sure!
I used to ride on two wheels, but now I need all four!

Good skills - I'd love that ability. I rely on the sat nav for unfamiliar trips and can read the signs and get myself in the right lanes etc.

But I sometimes hate how the signs are set out sometimes: good example would be heading back towards Lancashire - I used to approach the M60 and was offered "north and east" or "south and west" = I used to think, "neither, I'm trying to go north and west!!" Why the M60 doesn't have "clockwise" and "anticlockwise" on the signs I'll never know!

MattBLancs wrote: 05 Jul 2024, 13:15 Can anyone confirm: Google suggests I need a 41mm deep socket for the ball joint task - is that correct?

I'll have to get under the car and get my Verniers at it, nothing anywhere near that big, certainly not in deep format.

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/155183944240
(£8.88 half inch drive)

Halfords
https://www.halfords.com/tools/hand-too ... 12526.html
41mm £11.19 on trade card

Or could get a 10 piece set, including 41mm, for £25
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/364899793008

B&Q (in their new "pretend to be eBay/Amazon" mode)
https://www.diy.com/departments/us-pro- ... 390_BQ.prd
£8.85
Decided the jump from £8.85 for just a 41mm socket, to £23.49 for a ten piece deep impact socket set, including a 41mm was daft to pass up.

So bought this:

Due Wednesday/Thursday :)

If anyone remembers this painful saga:
viewtopic.php?p=715690#p715690

It appears the long (not) awaited sequel may have commenced this evening. :(

308 SW front tyre looks a bit low, will pump it up. Compressor on. Pressure read with the compressor's tyre inflator gauge = not that far off. Read with my dedicated electronic pressure gauge = quite down! All about 2.0 - 2.2 bar (should be 2.4) apart from the one looking a "bit" low = turns out it's only 1.25 bar inside!
Whoops will have to check them more often if they hide it well.

Screen wash topped up with minimal black muck. viewtopic.php?p=805166#p805166

Next the C5, tyres a little low, so all topped up.
Coolant topped up.

Went to move it back to the front and...

Coughed when let go of the key.
"Hmm, but odd, nevermind"
Then due it again,
And again,
And again.

Not this palava again!

Will jump straight to the bump start fix. Just need yo persuade my wife to be the tow-er and I'll be tow-ee.

5008 and 207 SW both sudden step change in appeal! :-D

Precisely me :) I love maps and use satnav only when I really must - usually in the last mile or so in a big, strange town (most are in my experience - strange, that is!). For that, I have a superb old Garmin Nuvi bought from a charity shop for a fiver... It still receives regular map updates courtesy of my running and cycling Garmin devices - they all use the same maps.

C5 = quick tow start with the 308 and Brum off it goes.

Long term fix either:
Fit an in tank pump (and dispense with the manual bulb which isn't designed to be at positive pressure)
Or
Fit a new (£300-£500) or second hand engine driven high pressure pump (£150?)

Will see how it behaves Tuesday and Wednesday on the commutes.

Wolverhampton 5008 exclusive with light coloured leather: ended this morning but has not yet been relisted as yet.
Dewsbury chavtastic 5008 exclusive still seems to be available.
