Re: Ends...
IIRC the name 'end' was always given to the last building at the end of town. Often a gap from the town and named after something nearby. Eg a well or park etc. As time went by other buildings grew around it forming a village called ******** End!

Re: Ends...
Did you put asterisks, Mick, or did the forum software censor you?
As I get older I think a lot about the hereafter - I go into a room and then wonder what I'm here after.

Re: Ends...
That makes sense, thinking of the geography of almost all the Ends around there Most are no longer 'Ends' thanks to building and urban sprawl over the past century or so...mickthemaverick wrote: ↑09 Apr 2023, 10:55 IIRC the name 'end' was always given to the last building at the end of town. Re: Ends...
During my quarry hike yesterday, I fortuitously discovered a couple of new Ends when I looked at my Strava...
I've seen a few more whilst out on the bike recently but as I've been riding with friends I've not been able to stop to 'bag' them...
This Strava map also shows ther quarry to good effect... Torr Works in the Mendips - see my post in Pictures of the Day for more details

Re: Ends...
Thought there was reason for me recognising the Goffs Oak on the signpost
The plea has gone unanswered and needs nailing. It would appear that this could have been a near miss. Probably one of those things that needs pre-priming to notice otherwise you just pass by without realising its there, and the plea pre-dated Mick's joining of the forum.

So those within a 30 Mles Radius of Goffs Oak, Hertfordshire treat yourself to a bit of Red Church Clock spotting safe in the knowledge that unless you know different there are under 10 Red Church Clocks in the entire UK.

Re: Ends...
Typical!! I was doing a charity delivery in Goff's Oak and met my homeless client outside the library. It is not a huge place so I must have driven past the church without noticing the clock!! Eye's will be alert on my next trip there!!

Re: Ends...
The Geograph Photo was taken on 14th July 2006, with a note on it that the clock was showing 12 O'clock, but not the right time for the photo. Move forward to September 2022, and it was still showing 12.00 when the google cameras passed, its red face showing presumably out of embarrassment at still not being fixedmickthemaverick wrote: ↑20 May 2023, 08:40 Typical!! Two bagged today...
Volunteering at the Box End Triathlon at a locality called Box End near, Kempston in Bedfordshire...
And this one in Cranfield spotted whilst out on a bike ride this afternoon... The sign overlooks the most gorgeous landscape leading down to the Marston Vale
It's been a gorgeous day around these parts... SPF50 suncream failed to do the necessary today
