No Ends for me today as it was entirely spent running and spending time with the family... We did however, talk a lot about Ends in the locality and Robyn reminded me of several I was unaware of...

I've replied in the Meetings Thread about an outing Mick ;)

Not a new one but taken to show one very mossy and decrepit road sign!
20230226_133810.jpg
It's in danger of falling down soon as its support poles are very rusty...

A similar sign back up the road has been 'modified' from Astwood and Stagsden to Astwood Slags  It was like it for ages and made me giggle each time...

Hedge End

Where's that then?

Came across it at random here
viewtopic.php?p=746743#p746743

But I knew exactly where it was. Back in the late 1970's I attended two first division games as an "away" supporter.
One at Ayresome Park, and the other at Elland Road accompanied by a friend who was a supporter of the "away" team, and was from the aforementioned Hedge End. His team were soundly beaten, (more so at at Elland Road) on both occasions but memorable days out :-D

Irrelevant quiz....what were the scores! :?:

But here's an "ends" quiz for those who like cricket....the Falcon got 7/18 not that good

Cricket Grounds in the UK by names of "ends" in County Cricket. Yes you get the two "ends" and all you have to do is type in the ground/county. You do not have to do them in order.

I'd suggest 2-0 at Ayrsome Park and 4-0 at Elland Road but my guess is you may have seen Alan Ball and Charlie George?
As for the cricket quiz I managed 8, principally the Test Grounds + Cardiff!! :-D

Yes Alan Ball was playing in both games for "the Saints" but it was November 1978 just before Charlie George joined Southampton. The most memorable bit football wise was Tony Currie's goal for Leeds, nice arrogant curler which he "milked" the applause of the home fans.

On the ends theme we were in the Away end on both occasions and in the football hooliganism days of the 70's I was reasonably pleased that the Saints got thrashed at Leeds, calmed the natives down and kept them in a good mood. It was in the days when the away fans were retained in the ground for about half and hour maybe more after the kick off to allow the home fans to disperse. Elland Road was someway out of the city and a bit of an intimidating place, and when we were let out got on buses back to town full of the home fans.

The home end at Ayresome Park was called the Holgate End, the traditional home-end at St James Park was the Leazes End, although it morphed across to the "Gallowgate End" in later years. The old Roker Park had the Fulwell End and The Roker End with the Fulwell being the premier end for the home fans.

Definitely having a spooky week!! Only last night I was discussing the West Ham team with Ken in Spain, who I am off to join for a week on Sunday, and we decided that Tony Currie would have been a great partner for Declan Rice!! :-D

He was a great favourite during his time at Watford when he lit up the locals in the Rookery End while visitors were herded into one corner of the Vicarage Road End!!

Didnt realise Tony Currie started his football league career off with Watford, after starting an apprenticeship with Chelsea. The wiki page about Tony has this reference to the Leeds v Saints game I was at...
His curling shot during United's November 1978 4–0 home win against Southampton F.C. won ITV's The Big Match Goal of the Season that year.
Its on youtube still, can't pick myself out in the crowd though!

None for me today, except a short run I've been busy with domestic work, cooking and baking ready for a long bike ride with a good friend tomorrow. I may be able to bag some then, depending on the route we choose to take...

Just one today... I saw loads but as I was riding with a friend I could not stop to photograph them.

I did get this one...

i rode into the little hamlet, near Woburn Sands, and could see no reason for it to be cross about anything... In fact it was a lovely little secluded place and rather delightful.

On the way to lunch with Mick and Bob today I drove through possibly the best End yet.. Water End on the B440 between Leighton Buzzard and Hemel Hempstead...

An achingly pretty little place :D It's on a busy road and there was no real opportunity to stop and take photos...

A post in one of the cycling groups I follow on Facebook threw up this just now...

It's on the route of a Sportive taking place this weekend, hence the red arrow above the nameplate ;)

As Jim says our lunch venue was surrounded by 'Ends'. On the way to the pub I went through Piccotts End and the very same Water End Jim mentioned. As I left I went to check out another just round the corner, Potten End, which is also a lovely place. The pics are not great as they are from the dash cam so you get what it has!! :-D
