True Matt, but each tyre did have to carry a third of what there was, rather than a quarter!! Not to mention me and a megga toolbox!!MattBLancs wrote: ↑06 Feb 2023, 21:26 Ah but they did have the advantage of not a great deal beyond the weight of the tyre itself pushing each wheel against the tarmac!

I used to be indecisive, now I'm not so sure!
I used to ride on two wheels, but now I need all four!

Ah, of course, that all depends how you drive your four-wheelers!!mickthemaverick wrote: ↑06 Feb 2023, 21:32

(Note the above unlikely conducive to 80,000 mile tyre lifespan!)

This'll definitely cut down at least one tyres wear...

Re: "How long do car tyres last"
Very true, and also make, compound make a massive difference. My Nexxens on the Jumpy are getting to end of life after 20k on the front, but cheaper and good grip. My Blackbird and Zeph11 in the UK did a back tyre in less than 3k and were 130 quid 25 years ago. 2 Backs to 1 front. Bridgestone Battlax. A mate had an Aprilia Mille, 1500m for the rear, it was a super sticky and he did play

Up N Down has recently tought me a C6 is less keen on doing that trick, so has extinguished my thoughts about trying that in my C5!

As an aside - if Mr Plod caught you driving a DS on 3 wheels, wonder what the offence would be considering they're designed to be driven like that in extremis ?

I'd deploy the (I think?) Charles d'Gaull excuse? "Was four wheels when I set off, just trying to get home officer!"

A DS on 3 wheels saved Charles de Gaulles life

Re: "How long do car tyres last"
Anyone who reads my C5 threads know I record everything! So, here is a summary of my tyre wear stats on my 21year/190kmiles C5 2.2HDi 215/55R16:
Michelin Pilot Primacy Qty7 (inc original fit) Average mileage 40,271
Goodyear Efficientgrip Performance Qty6 Average mileage 29,073
Budget (Wanli S1099 and S1063) Qty7 Average mileage 41,089
All new tyres started at 8mm, and I generally replace them at under 2mm remaining.
Notes:
1. My interest in tyre wear started before the car had covered 20,000miles. The rear Michelins wore unevenly on the outer edges. Citroen UK fobbed me off with "you must be cornering too fast" - doh!. After several exchanges later, CitroenUk eventually admitted that a batch of rear subframes were misaligned having been drilled incorrectly. They replaced the subframe and gave me 2 new tyres under warranty. It pays to pester.
2. The majority of my mileage was motorway/dual carriageway cruising conservatively at 65-70mph.
3. The Wanlis were fine on the rear, but on the front uneven wear caused significant steering pull.
4. All tyres were routinely rotated. I recorded how many miles they spent on front and rear (but I wont bore you with that much info).
5. I was disappointed with the Goodyear's life, so I stopped using them. Also, on one, the tread cracked down to the body after only 2 years. I had a long chat with a Goodyear UK expert in Birmingham. He gave me a whole wealth of knowledge on tyre wear rates. One thing I remember was that tyre wear is not linear with mileage. As the tyre tread reduces, the rate of wear reduces. So, that last mm or 2 may last longer than you think.
6. The last tyre I fitted was a Falken ZE310 Ecorun for its good write-up. It only has 7mm new tread vs the usual 8mm, so the life is immediately reduced!

Re: "How long do car tyres last"
No 5 is correct, all other things being equal. It is to do with the tread blocks being stiffer and resisting edge wear as they reduce in height.

Re: "How long do car tyres last"
It all depends how you drive tbh
How fast you drive and like are you turning the steering wheel without any movement when moving out of bays etc. Many factors come into play but honestly tyres should last about 10-15k miles its best to change them after this as to keep the car grippy to the road and allow it to put power down better which will save petrol in the long run. Just make sure you cant see more then 2/8 of a penny when putting it into the tyre tread.
Hope this helps
