Pub of the Day
https://co-curate.ncl.ac.uk/cumberland- ... he%201860s.

The Cumberland Arms is located at 17 Front Street, Tynemouth. It is a red brick and faience Victorian gothic-style public house, which was built in 1898 by W. B. Reid and Co., and designed by F. R. N. Haswell. It was built on the site of an earlier public house which was built in the 1860s. The Cumberland Arms is on North Tyneside 'Local List' of buildings and parks that are of special local architectural and historic interest.

Spooky one!! I met my mate Dave for lunch today and we had to choose between The Fancott Arms and The Engineer in Harpenden. We settled on The Engineer because we thought The Fancott would be too busy as it's half term and the railway would be running!! :-D

Yes, there's something about them... Hard to put your finger on it but they do have a certain charm...

Our erstwhile public conveniences - we now have posh new ones - were converted into a coffee shop :o

Some say the coffee tastes like p.....

One of my daughters was married in Washington Old Hall and her reception was in a posh restaurant that had been public toilets.

We decided to go out for lunch today as the weather was so warm and headed off for the Nags Head in Little Hadham. Unfortunately when we arrived we discovered that the pub has become an Indian Restaurant so we carried on up to Albury and then on to this cracking place which we have not frequented for many years. :
The Catherine Wheel
The Catherine Wheel
We were lucky to get a table as they were very full with 40+ attendees at a private 90th birthday party in one bar and a fair number in the other one. However there was one table for 6 which was available so we sat down at one end and browsed the menu. SWMBO selected the crispy whitebait followed by the locally made Toad in the Hole with peas while I went for the crunchy pork bites and apple sauce, also followed by the Toad and rounded off with Bread and Butter Pudding and custard. I'll leave the pictures to tell the rest, suffice to say it was delicious and we will definitely be returning in the not too distant future! :-D
