Early 18th century?
As I get older I think a lot about the hereafter - I go into a room and then wonder what I'm here after.

The Bridge House in Ambleside, England is indeed a unique and historic building that has stood the test of time. However, the story behind its construction is a matter of debate among historians.
According to one popular legend, the Bridge House was built in the 17th century by a wealthy Ambleside family in order to avoid paying property taxes. The story goes that the family had to pay taxes based on the size of their land, so they decided to build a house on the bridge over the River Rothay to avoid being taxed for the land underneath the house.

Indeed, I see a rouge Z there!Paul-R wrote: ↑20 Jul 2023, 09:34 According to this https://writingexplained.org/roofs-vs-rooves rooves is an an incorrect pluralisation. Roofs has been correct since at least the 18th century.
Mind you, they use 'pluralization' so the site is suspect in my eyes.
It was for me and still is but then I'm old and today - even older!

A very slippery footbridge just down from Haugh Head Crossing Wooler

Re: A Bridge Too Far...
This is a well hidden bridge, you never get a clear view of it from a car from the road.
Definitely a POTD composition, but this is the thread for bridges of all shapes and sizes. The fence at Alnmouth Station is a glorious bonus in the pattern of the image!

Crystal clear water and an odd "rock pavement" river bed at this point on the River South Tyne.

A couple of bridges from my Two Tunnels run on Sunday
Carrying the Kennet and Avon Canal across the River Avon near Bath...
All about it: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dundas_Aqueduct
And yes, that is a railway line you see
And a lovely old overbridge across the Somerset and Dorset Railway trackbed just before the North Portal of the Devonshire Tunnel...
And the tunnel Running through tunnels is a magical experience
This is the short one... The next one, Coombe Down, is almost four times longer

Re: A Bridge Too Far...
Not the most polished of constructions, but there is a nice picture to be had of a simple wooden bridge

Re: A Bridge Too Far...
Not in the greatest condition, but doesn't carry heavy locomotives and trucks over it any more. Humans and dogs, the odd bike, maybe a horse or two. The iron work is pretty rusty but there is a decent thickness to the woodwork...if pretty soggy and rotten looking...should stay up until it falls down!

Re: A Bridge Too Far...
It's at Newton St Boswells Roxburghshire Scottish Borders.
More information than I could reasonably post on the forum can be gleaned from Disused Stations (superb resource) page on Newton St Boswells former station here...about the former Railway infrastructure
