Re: A Bridge Too Far...
That viaduct is gorgeous and has been extensively restored in the recent past and made fit for a future reopening of the railway to use it...
The way the L and B are going this may indeed become reality in the not too distant...

That bus almost looks vintage in that shade of green Neil... Shame the modern route 'blind' display gives it away...

Watched an episode of The Architecture the Railways built series 3 Episode 8 North Staffordshire
https://uktvplay.co.uk/shows/the-archit ... 8051944001
Not all about North Staffordshire, but an interesting piece on a Canal Railway in Poland operated by a pulley system with a submerged bogie on submerged tracks collecting the boats which are transported over a railway on land traversing a steep change in level to be deposited at the next canal, and also the beatuiful s-curve viaduct on the Newcastle Metro at Byker.
This from the archives was when my eyes were first opened to its hidden qualities, from a hardly notice it previous status.

and having watched this little film I can see why.....its an absolute marvel of civil engineering with the skill and expertese and precision required to produce the structure equally as impressive as for the huge number of stone, brick and ironwork viaducts produced in the Victorian era.

An iconic Bridge on the M62. A little nearby trivia which very few will notice is in the trivia investigation thread.

Re: A Bridge Too Far...
Just saw this on the Beeb. hey apparently did openings for tourists to see but are stopping then due to the cost and only opening for river traffic.
Been over it a few times but never seen it in operation.
My own bridge to far. Had to walk to Birtley to get daughters C3 back. I mentioned recently seeing a theodoliteist working nearby. Looks like the bridge is safe as it appears that the pathway has been dug up and new cables laid to the service station. Maybe for charging points, may have to have a nosy.
The service area and the alternative footbridge
Definitely a bridge too far as it took an hour and a half to walk using it. Two miles

Re: A Bridge Too Far...
That swing bridge is quite spectacular Steve...
Your bridge too far will be in no danger if it forms part of a public right of way... 'Stopping Up' a right of way on a permanent basis is quite a task and not lightly undertaken...

Re: A Bridge Too Far...
Mr Theodolite thought that it was being removed and replaced with a disabled friendly one. While I may not be disabled, those steps up to it are a challenge. Others further up the A1 have been recently.

Re: A Bridge Too Far...
I can't find a thread specifically about tunnels so this one will do as a tunnel is a sort of bridge and bridges are involved
I've just entered a Half Marathon I've been keen to do for several years as it takes in two very iconic tunnels and a viaduct on the former Somerset and Dorset Joint railway... It nicely combines four of my passions - running, old railways, bridges and tunnels
The tunnels are the Devonshire and Coombe Down - the scourge of drivers and firemen due to them being on steep gradients and having limited clearance... They were particularly notorious when hauling a heavy Pines Express with a 9F on the front
The viaduct we run across is Tucking Mill...
We run out and back so take in these three significant landmarks twice... Magic

Then start one! "A Tunnel Too Deep" or "A Tunnel Too Long" maybe?

Re: A Bridge Too Far...
This just popped up. Top deck of the Tees Transporter Bridge. I had no idea.
Really must make the effort to go on it. Sixty years since I was last on it.
Years before the flyover was constructed ('73~ '75)
