Re: Engine turning over but refusing to start -FIXED

Post by KennyW »

Finally success, as I suspected when I inspected the wiring to crankshaft sensor, there was a partially broken wire which I believe is the comms to ecu thus the signal voltage was away down hence fault.

Replaced plug with new and spliced in to the wiring loom. Working fine.

I have the old plug which I'm going to split the plug apart and re wire.

Re: Engine turning over but refusing to start

It's happened again working for 24 hours but different fault codes:

P0342 : Camshaft sensor permanent fault

Loss of camshaft signal while engine running

Variables associated with fault

Battery voltage 13.45 V
Camshaft - crankshaft synchronisation: yes
Engine speed : 1824 rpm
Coolant temp 77 C
mileage 239057
Acc pedal position 28 %
Vehicle speed at loss of sync :1824 rpm
Duration of starting command.

P0017

Starting monitoring

Sync time too long

I changed the camshaft sensor but left crankshaft sensor.

1. Should I but the original camshaft sensor back on and try again.
2. I'm going to do a bsi /battery reset.

Thoughts please

So to get it running you repaired/changed the crankshaft sensor plug and changed the camshaft sensor? If this is the case, why did you change the camshaft sensor? When working through problems I only change one thing at a time and if it doesn't cure it put it back to how it was (unless it's known fault).

Yes Pete your summary is correct but on reading the fitting procedure for the camshaft sensor.I may have misread the instructions.

But I will change for the original and fit correctly as per procedure and see if that works.

Fixed again put old sensor back in , did a proper BSI reset. It started fine.
Marc, Are there diagrams of crankshaft and camshaft 3 pin plugs with details of what each wire does and voltages associated with them

I have no experience with C5 X7 but reference voltages are normally 5V for sensors. Marc will no doubt be able to confirm.

Only briefly read through your post and fuel pressures seemed low especially the 77 bar. The fuel pressure regulator is normally pulse width modulation and 12V (switching on and off rapidly) to control the pressure. Pressure has to be achieved at cranking speed otherwise it will not fire. Downside is fuel pressure sensor could of course be reporting the wrong pressure to the ECU.

Open Cycle Ratio in Lexia for a working Xantia is 17-18% and that will be pretty much the same I would guess. Guesses down get cars up and running again though...

I see you mention can and crank synchronity issues too. It may be the more than one fault exists but all the you can if you do not have an oscilloscope is work with what you have got information wise! Sorry I cannot be of more help.

Thanks Roger,

5 volts is what I found but my curiosity has got the better of me hence the question/request
