Xantia front end clunk

Unread post by citroenguy »

Hello
I had some loose joints in my Xantia front end, so i replaced both stabilizer links and the right bottom balljoint.
But there is still some noise.. I have replaced the left bottom balljoint too now.
Track rod ends feel fine, Spheres are quite recent.

The clunk is present on small sharp bumps (joins in the road, small edges etc) , to my ears it comes from the left but that is always hard to determine.
Sounds just like a loose balljoint or stabilizer link.

Have heard thar the front struts/cylinders can rattle.

Anyone got some similar experiences?

Hiya, I had been chasing a similar noise on my Xantia. I had changed the lower ball joints, inner rubber bushes, anti roll bar drop links, the anti roll bar rubber bushes, recently the steering rods and finally the wheel bearings (after one began humming on the M-way) and still, there was an annoying clunk.

After a fair bit of extra sensory perception :-D I noticed that my recently replaced brake pads were slightly loose on the right side. I wondered if the caliper had needed bled so I bled the full system. Still slightly loose. I then noticed the part of the caliper that is held by the horizontal pin was moving and allowing the sliding part of the caliper to kind of move about 4-5mm against the pin - this was knocking as the wheel hit some bumps and after looking at other calipers it turned out that there was a little kind of fitting missing that was intended to reduce this movement (it also holds the wire for the brake wear contacts) and after fitting a new one the knock stopped. Well mostly, it improved it. A further investigation showed that the actual caliper sliding pegs were worn and allowing the caliper to slightly rattle on bumps. I replaced these too and it is now silent. I'd have a look at the calipers in case this is your cause. Can at least eliminate it!

Hey, yes I believe it is the same. The thinner pin goes through one of these two little arches that fit in the caliper.

One of mine was missing and allowed the thing to move more.
