Yet another "unseen from the road" Viaduct in a wooded ravine, but from pictures high and handsome in stone. I've looked at the map and its pretty adjacent to the delightfully named "Climbing Tree Farm". No point keeping these bits of unknown Northumberland to myself, you would have thought that by now in my wanderings I would have seen everything there is to see round these parts. Not a bit keep curious, keep looking always something new to discover.
Did the walk today, beautifully muddy track and about a mile down through the steep sided woodland to the flatter path next to the river. Super viaduct, solidly constructed from stone but no pics to show for it, camera had been left at home :-D I did fish out an interesting brick from the riverside which very plainly, in situ named-side-up, proclaimed "Walbottle" and added it to the collection. Photographed it back at the ranch for POTD here

Can't imagine many youngsters will dream of being Engine Drivers any more. With automation and modern signalling taking away required human intervention, even if a human is retained notionally in the driving seat its going to be a pretty boring job :-D Having come across inadvertently the UK's only dedicated signalling and control facility, Seimens Mobility in Chippenham (formerly Westinghouse) who have the contract for such matters on the revival of "The Northumberland Line", Michael Portillo on one of his Train Journeys, visited Chippenham and went "inside the factory".
State of the Art signalling, and safe spacing and management of the trains using the tracks is now done on a "moving block" system which facilitates greater capacity of trainlines. Wiki has a wordy explanation, but there must be a short animation somewhere.
"In railway signalling, a moving block is a signalling block system where the blocks are defined in real time by computers as safe zones around each train. This requires both knowledge of the exact location and speed of all trains at any given time, and continual communication between the central signalling system and the train's cab signalling system. Moving block allows trains to run closer together (reduced headway) while maintaining required safety margins, thereby increasing the line's overall capacity."

Never heard so many abbreviations quoted in a short video. Makes it quite unintelligible :-D

I have posted it up for this quality, it does try to explain the signalling systems, and also supplies a word of the day.

I'll give you this Jim! Back in August 2023 I treated the thread to the whole sign but it does require an onerous link click viewtopic.php?p=767101&hilit=northern+edge#p767101
