It shows the gradient of the line in each direction from the post. Full info here :-D

That be a gradient post indicating whether the track bed goes up or down. In your photo - the track to the left goes up at 1:160, and to the right it goes down by 1:112. Generally there'll be a new post at each place the gradient changes.

More info can be found here for those with nothing better to do :-D

A nice disused (for rail traffic since 1964) railway bridge over the Grand Union Canal...

The bridge carries a footpath - fairly reasonably called 'Railway Walk'...

The long shadow belongs to me :D

The Newcastle to Carlisle line has three signal boxes of this unusual style. The ones at Wylam and Haltwhistle have featured on the thread before and both are right at the station platform.

Hexham's signal box is some distance from the station, and a bit inaccessible for the amateur photographer to get a decent photo. This was the best I got with outstretched arm through the security fence.

Mick's POTD posting of the Romney, Hythe & Dymchurch railway the other day reminded me of 'The Nazca Lines of Lydd' which can be found the other side of Dungeness power station to the RH&D railway. :)

These lines are actually the remants of a complete rail system.

A track to nowhere in particular.

They are situated on Lydd Ranges - an MOD range right on the barren shingle spit of land that has Dungeness power station on its tip. There's been a miltary site here for over 150 years, and the rail system was installed in 1936 to serve the range - both for moving munitions, kit and personnel around and also for attaching moving targets to for range target practice. The system is now seldom, if ever, used.

Like a scene from a Tarkovsky film, the little Hunslet returns from its visit to the wastelands....

One of the little ancient Wickham motorised trolleys that used to support the moving range targets has been restored at Amblerley Museum and occasionally gets a run :)

Soon to be gone I fear
The signal boxes at either end of the black bridge (Marcheys House and North Seaton) are to be removed as part of the Northumberland line development
https://www.northumberlandline.uk/post/ ... be-removed
....two need to be removed entirely - Marcheys House and North Seaton. This is because of how close they are to level crossings, which means that the new level crossing safety equipment won’t work properly if the buildings remain....

We will also be working with Network Rail to see if any items or equipment from the signal boxes can be made available as part of the demolition process, outside of any items that need to be retained for re-use elsewhere.
