Though I can't see the similar picture in your link. Maenofferen was in a lot better condition when I went though. So sad to see the damage.

That'll be a 'normal' cut tunnel involving blood, sweat, and tears 
One of my memories from (possibly) there, was walking along a tunnel just like that and seeing a series of openings around knee height and about 2' across. On peering into one of those openings, I found I was looking into a slate cavern from the top. The torches were hopeless at filling the void

Yes the difference in the walls is clear, it was the very similar set of colours that convinced me!
