In 1958, the company was acquired by Dunlop Rubber.

In that 1955 report here is the info on John bull relevant at that time
72. John Bull Rubber Co. Ltd. originated in the Leicester Rubber Co. formed in 1906 to deal, inter alia, with job lots of cycle covers and tubes. After a few months the trade names " Swift" and " Swan " were registered, and tyres under these names were manufactured for the Leicester Rubber Co. by outside suppliers. These trade marks were used for only a short time, and in 1908 the trade mark " John Bull" was registered, tyres still being made for the concern by outside suppliers. In 1915 the Company established its own factory for solid perambulator tyres, but it did not manufacture pneumatic cycle tyres until 1923. By 1928 car and motor cycle tyres also were being produced. In 1934 the name of the Company was changed to John BuU Rubber Co. Ltd., when it became a public company.

73. John Bull today produces a number of rubber products, but tyres (car, giant, motor cycle and cycle) account for 30 per cent, to 40 per cent, of its total sales. The Company has no agreements with other tyre manufacturers either at home or overseas, and its overseas subsidiary, John Bull Rubber Co. (Australia) Pty. Ltd., set up in 1951, is not producing tyres. John Bull's overseas trade is conducted through distributors.

74. At home John Bull produces almost exclusively for the replacement market and, although it has supplied motor cycle and cycle tyres through both wholesalers and retailers, has always pursued a policy of supplying car and giant tyres direct to garages.

"Rubber Town" my Grandfather (Mothers side) worked there all his adult life.....was also in the Home Guard there during the war.

The town is now VERY gentrified and is a tourist magnet/being close to Bath.......

Case number 2.
Can you decode the information on this common notice :?:

Yes that was very early in the days of this thread, but another hydrant notice has caught my attention today.

Artistically much more pleasing, older with a bit of patina while remaining clear.

Steve's little piece on Margaret Calvert deserves a bit further delving.

Not widely known I would have thought but quite prolific in the largely unnoticed world of font and typeface and graphic design, on road signs, railways and motorways, and the local Tyne and Wear Metro!

Bit of read it yourself if you are interested but you will have seen her work if you have travelled the roads and railways of the united kingdom.

Covers the road and motorway signs designed by Jock Kinneir ans Margaret Calvert
Here she is, with one of her road sign designs on the handbag!

Worth a watch, nice to see the real person but a very poor performance from May in typically ignorant Top Gear style. Margaret maybe came across as a little tetchy, but May would have got the same reaction from anyone with his inane questions.

Swan Trivia

Do your best. I'll start off with the statement...

"The King is often credited with "owning all the Swans in England".

He arguably might own this one

But he definitely doesn't own these ones

Come on folks plenty trivia about swans

Those birds on the second image are the national bird of Finland and appeared on their one euro coin.

Look up the derivation of the phrase Swansong...much to do about the apparent behavior of the only breed of swan the king for which the king may have a legitimate claim of ownership.

You'd have thought that the origin of the name of the town of Swanage would come from Swans.... well - maybe...... maybe not. Depends on where you look.

"The name Swanage comes from Swanawic, which probably means 'dairy farm of the herdsmen or peasants'"
https://www.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk/docume ... 9396889898

".........the name “Swanage” has an interesting history. It is believed to have originated from the Anglo-Saxon era and is possibly derived from the Old English words “swan” and “āc”. The former refers to the abundance of swans in the area, while the latter means oak tree."

The Mute Swan's Latin name is Cygnus Olor. 'Cygnus' means 'swan' in Latin. 'Olor' also means 'swan' in Latin. They obviously didn't have much imagination when they named them
