Just found this photo of the old one which it replaced - I don't see a filter, unless it is on the end of the tip:

The filings on the end of that dont look good  The filings you found in the filter bowl are quite common with low pressure pump failure. I cant remember if there is any sort of strainer in the HP pump or not. Are you aware if this car has ever had petrol (or anything else apart from proper diesel) put in it at any point? This can cause premature wear of the HP pump. As for testing the HP pump, not really without specialist gear. I would probably clean the regulator, run it for a few days and then remove & recheck the regulator again for filings, even if it runs ok. Might be worth also stocking up on a few extra fuel filters just in case.

It was previously run for a period on biodiesel - can't remember how much went through it but would have been at around 3 - 4 IBC cubes.

How can I clean the regulator - I thought the filings were on the inside and therefore unable to remove? I presume that I can't prise off the filter clean and put it back on.

Does this sound normal for a HP pump?

Can you not just wipe off from the outside & flush with brake cleaner? Looks like the swarf is sticking out the gauze? Maybe a magnet if the filings are ferrous ?

That's what I done. Used a paper towel and a magnet.
I was hoping that I could open the diaphragm I in order to blow the filings down to the larger holes at the base, but couldn't get it to action. I didn't hear any clicking noise from it so wasn't sure if it was operating - seems to be fine on the car though.

As you suggest I'll take it off again later in the week after some driving and see what happens. I would suspect that those filings are from the high pressure pump as the tank pump shouldn't get past the fuel filter.

Took it out for a drive tonight and it is (touch wood) going a lot better. Response 'feels' better and there has been no cut outs nor overruns.
The noise when turning on ignition (recorded 2 posts above) seems to be less pronounced too.

Ill take the regulator off at weekend and see how much swarf has accumulated on it.
