Wow...what a read! Takes me back through several generations of Rovers and Austin-Morris/Leyland from the 1930s through to the late '70s.
I still have a Gunson's Carbalancer in the workshop, left over from years of balancing twin and triple SU and other carbs and still have the knack for gently lifting the piston pin to listen for that rise-then-fall of idle speed, which showed that the mixture was just right.
